.22 suggestions?

Post by knxvduckhntr »

Hell all,
I am searching for an accurate .22 rifle for target shooting/squirrel hunting. I have had quite a few suggestions, so I thought I would ask around in here. I see the CZ 452 mentioned a lot here; would this be a good choice? Any others you could recommend in the $300 - $500 price range?
Thanks,
Doug

The CZ 452 would be a great choice. You can get a Yo-Dave trigger kit off of E-bay install it yourself and have a great rifle. I have two. One in .22 the other in 17m2. these are discontinued, but they still can be found new. . Your dealer can order you one from Zanders. They even have a CZ 452-2E SILHOUETTE RIFLE 22LR BLUED in stock which might be to your liking. It has a synthetic stock with a cheek comb on it. Good luck, and Welcome to Steelchickens.

Heavy barreled actions are... well, heavy.

You might think that it'd be no big deal to pack around a rifle that weights a pound or three more than a rifle with a standard tapered barrel, but believe me... it gets heavy quickly. If you are going to carry the rifle for squirrel hunting I strongly suggest going with a standard taper barrel.

Some options... in no particular order. (I own and compete with a Weatherby and it is a fantastic rifle. I bought a second one for squirrel hunting but eventually decided it was too pretty to take into the woods. :-\ )

Ruger 77/22 (Nicely made and uses the standard Ruger 10-round rotary magazine that is flush with the stock... I like that in a hunting rifle)

What type of target shooting do you have in mind. In your posted price range, if it is smallbore silhouette, then go with the CZ, if it is smallbore cowboy lever action get yourself a good Marlin 39A from Gunbroker and have at it. They will all kill squirrels quite effectively if you can hit them. If you plan to use the gun for smallbore silhouette, I would definitely recommend a good variable scope like a Leup 6.5-20x or a bushnell 6-24. You don't want to squirrel hunt with a fixed high power scope as picking up a squirrel with something like that would be an accomplishment in itself and depth of field would also be a challenge.
