CZ Action and Barrel Advice

Post by aliascraig »

Dear MS Shooters,
I have decided to buy my son a new CZ rim fire rifle after the through recommendation from the MS community, and since the Australian dollar is so good at the moment. However I am a little confused about some of the options available. Firstly Actions, the most popular seem to be the 452 and 453; my understanding is the only difference is the set trigger on the 453. Does this mean that you can expect the same accuracy from both actions or does one have an advantage? Can you get a gunsmith to `work' but not replace to make the 452 trigger just as good as the 453 action in regards to it feel, no creep, pull weight etc as we are not allowed to swap triggers here in Australia, only work them. Is there anything wrong with the 455 action as I understand that the other actions are being replaced, no one seems to have anything nice to say about the 455 action here.

Barrels; are all of the barrels pretty much the same from CZ in regards of accuracy, does the length make any difference? And finally some barrel appear to be pinned and some threaded, is there a difference in accuracy or longevity, I assume that a threaded barrel is better.

Any other suggestion that you guys can make on these models would be great, apart from stocks, which just seems to be personal preference, there is nothing much else to differentiate these.

Many thanks in return.

Kind Regards,

Craig.

Good for you AND your son.

I would expect any differences (off a bench)to be attributable to ammo preferences of each barrel, bedding, and individual barrel quality, and the usual suspects.....

Yes

I haven't shot one. The rimfire forum boards are pretty full of negative accuracy (as compared to the 452) reports. :-@ :-@

I would assume that too, though my Anschutz argues the point. =)) =))

Just the trigger, and that's a personal preference thing to. Though here set triggers must have the "set" feature adjusted out (I think.. :-\ :-\ )
I shot a match today and my partner I was squadded with used a 453. I couldn't see much difference operationally from the 452 I used.

Boyd,

Thanks a million for that. I think that I will shop around for price and place an order as it looks like the 452 and 453's are to be phased out, well at least here in Australia. Looks like it is just the luck of the draw to see how well it will shoot, but there are no mechanical reasons why it should not be something quite suitable with the 452 action and trigger once someone has tinkered a bit with it.

Many thanks in return.

Regards,

Craig.

I have a Silhouette and know of a few blokes using them or some other CZ. You can change the trigger but not for Hunter class. That gives you the option of swapping over triggers between heavy and hunter class. I couldn't be brothered with that so just put in a trigger kit ( Brooks but YoDave is the same http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/sh ... p?t=330293) that reduced creep and gave me lighter trigger weight.

Craig, you will not be disappointed with either 452 or 453, and the resale value will hold if your son does not become addicted, like the rest of us.

I'm using the CZ 452 Silhouette (syn stock) for our indoor game during the winter. I tried the E.Brooks kit..okay but if you're serious go for the Timney for about $90 USA.I changed mine out after about a year using the kit. You have to do a little rework in the trigger cavity to make it fit but it's well worth it.
The Timney is a crisp break at any lbs. you set it.

Thanks for the great advice.

I also wanted to ask about scope rings for this rifle. You have mentioned the BKL rings before which I have fitted to my Anschutz. To be honest they didn’t seem to be as good as I thought that they could be. Perhaps I should have sent them back, they were quite sloppy and don’t sit straight once mounted. Someone mentioned that they have some quality control problems from time to time. Nevertheless has anyone any experience with the BKL 261, the longer 4 inch mount or the BKL double strap 263?

Are there any other aluminium type rings that someone can recommend that are good but affordable? There are many rings around but most seem to be made of steel and most of the others are very expensive, most people don't seem to even list the weight.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Craig,
The older (original manufacturer) BKL rings had much better quality control on what went out. The 263's were built for the springer typer recoil of an air rifle, they will work for what you want, a bit of over kill but I do not think that Air Force air guns (who took over the BKL patents) are making the 263, so if you find some they are likely to be the original manufacturer.
Most of the ring makers are using steel, thus weight can become an issue, you may want to look into some of the air gun web sites for beeman or other mounts.
