Break in for a Rimfire?
Hey yall,
If you are a believer in "break in" for rifles (I don't wish to start that debate), do rimfires need it? I don't know, considering the lack of copper. I'm going to be shooting Wolf MT, CCI Green Tag, and maybe some federals through a new CZ 452 silhouette I just bought. Goin to mount the scope on it tomorrow. Stupid Scheel's sold the gun, but has no rings for it. Will go elsewhere tomorrow.
I fired it with some snap caps (the pachmyer ones) tonight after I cleaned off the packing oil. It was surprisingly crisp, I didn't detect any creep at all. It definitely feels 2-stage, but no creaky creep at all. I was surprised considering lots of CZ 452 reviews complain of poor triggers, but couldn't find reviews specific to the Silhouette model.
Also, Bought a Vortex crossfire 4-12x40, fine crosshair, with AO and target turrets, was only $150 (regular price) at MidwayUSA. I will review it later after I get to the range. I like the vipers (got one 6.5-20x50 w target dot), and this was a great price on what seems like decent glass. Real clear.
Thanks for any/all advice, and again, please no "break in" debate.

Re: Break in for a Rimfire?
As far as holding a group, no break in. As for working on a marginal trigger, I would shoot at least 500 before trying to do anything with it. Not all CZ's have bad triggers, just different from the Annies and other custom triggers. If you are used to shooting a heavy trigger, they are not bad, generally, always a chance of one not fitting the usual standard.

You say you don't want to start "that debate", and then you ask if break in is necessary. Make up your mind!

ok frog, will ask the question a different way. Does a Rimfire need a break in, in the same regard as a Centerfire does? Is that more clear?

Barrel fouling for ammo, usually two to three rounds will do it. Break in, no.

Yup, just clean before shooting the first time, then start trying to wear it out.
I wasn't being completely obtuse before; there are people who believe in incantations and other voodoo.

fyi...for new batches of ammo I usually foul with at least 5 before I try to grouping it.

Re: Break in for a Rimfire?
You 'break-in' a barrel so it is easier to clean, not so it is more accurate. If you have a good bbl, the first 5 shots out of it will be the best, it's all down hill from there.

We're in the smallbore forum here, Jerry. Are you sure you didn't mean that statement for highpower? I definitely don't think it's true for smallbore silhouette rifles.

Re: Break in for a Rimfire?
Do you think a 22 gets better with age?
You are correct in accusing me of speaking mainly of HP. I think you have to shoot a lot but you can wear out a 22 also.
You gotta keep a close eye on me caus I do go off corse at times. I like to refer to it as "loosing my place."
