Getting ready for my first shoot at Ridgway

Hey all,

This is my first post here, so be nice I have shot at Ridgway before, but have not been there in a long time (my hometown is about 5-10 miles from the club there). I moved to Columbus, OH and have not really been shooting a lot since. Before I moved I finished building up my Savage MKII for silhouette and have not actually gotten a chance to shoot it in competition yet. I just received the rule book in the mail today and I am somewhat concerned about the comb height rule. I fitted my gun with a Richards Microfit Tac-Driver stock (http://www.rifle-stocks.com/silhouette.htm). I thought the comb was high when I first got it because it had to be shaved down to be able to get the bolt out. I have looked through the barrel and have attached an image of what I see. It should be legal because the comb top doesn't actually go above mid-bore, correct? It is very close, so do you think I will have a problem? I have also attached a photo of my gun for reference. If you see me walking around Ridgway and recognize my gun, stop and say hello I am a noob by all accounts of the definition, so I can use all the help I can get!

That thing looks like it would shoot master scores with bb"s in it. How does it shoot at 100m? Sure looks better than what I'm shooting. Maybe that's why I can't get out of aaa. lol

All of my targets are at home in PA, so I can't post anything right now, but it holds its own for not costing a ton of money. Richards Microfit stocks are a great product and that is why my gun looks a lot better than I can actually shoot it

I will be shooting in Masters, but that is only because I am unclassified as of right now

When building or adding a stock to a rifle it is nice to have your own gauge or template handy to check dimensions. It is sometimes difficult to look down the bore and tell if the stock is high or low or what. I have made the following gauge to help.
Using a piece of cardboard approx 20 inches tall and 40 inches wide. About 10 inches up draw a straight line across the 40 inch width. This is the centerline of the bore. A second line 2 1/4 inches below that for the lower side of the forend and a third line 7 inches below the first for the toe of the stock. Remove the bolt from the rifle and lay the rifle on is's side on the cardboard. Level and square up the rifle with the surface of the cardboard. Insert a "straight" 1/8 inch rod thru the barrel. The rod will find and lay on the centerline of the barrel. Line the bottom edge of the rod with the top line on the cardboard on both ends of the barrel, and this will be your comb height. This has given you a 1/16 inch fudge factor for the measurement, in other words better 1/16 under than 1/16 over. The forend should be above the second line and the toe should be above the lower line. I also have some small square blocks I use as squares to make sure I am looking directly down for the measurements.

I was not even aware that they were shooting Saturday, I will have to look into that for sure.

When building or adding a stock to a rifle it is nice...[clipped for length]...small square blocks I use as squares to make sure I am looking directly down for the measurements.

Thank you for taking the time to write that up for me. That is an excellent idea and I will do that as soon as I get back to PA on Tuesday. Hopefully if it is a little over I have enough time between Tuesday and Sunday to get it shaved down and a few coats of Tru Oil on it.

Designed for use on or off the bench, it comes with a 2-1/4” wide forearm, and has a flat palm pad for that offhand shot that counts. The Tac-Driver’s dimensions conform to NRA Silhouette rules, and in laminated wood, it weighs the same as other leading thumbhole silhouette stocks on the market.

According to their site it is legal, but I don't know if they can take into account how much each person removes during the sanding and fitting steps.

The comb shall not extend above the centerline of the bore, but Monte Carlo roll may rise 1/2" on the off side.

I am somewhat confused about the Monte Carlo roll statement. Is that the raised part only? Does it count towards the height of the comb.

Hey all,

So, it is looking like budget wise that nationals are not in my future. I'm heading to grad school in September and really need to save as much money as possible before I go. Since I will be home and only 5 miles away, I will still stop by on Sunday just to see how things are run.

My question is, do you think if I brought my gun they could inspect it as if I were shooting just to find out once and for all if it is legal?

Hey all,

It is me again, the one without a clue haha.

I have moved some money around and it looks like I can afford to shoot Nationals, what are the chances that there are some post entry spots still available?

Would I be able to stop by Ridgway and sign up tomorrow (Friday)?

Also, can anyone get me a registration time for Saturday's club match? Do you need to be pre-registered for it like you do Nationals?

If I shot in Saturday's club match, would that give me a classification for Nationals?

Sorry for all the questions haha I get nervous when starting something new and like to have all the info ahead of time

Show up..I have not preregistered due to ever changing schedule but will be there tomorrow. Usually no problem to sign up at the last miniute, and I doubt this year will be any different.
The match Sat should classify you for the nationals...see you there.

Here is a pic of our new bud in fine form at Ridgway. Adam's scores doubled by the last match and made a great first impression. Although he doesn't share annoying and irritating traits like the rest of us, he is steel chicken material.
