Stock Repair or Remake

Hi guys, problem here. I have a 54.18 repeater with mcmillan stock. (not the problem) On the bottom magazine well, there is a huge hole to fit action screws, magazine, and magazine release, plus beveled out spots on each side of magazine. I cannot get the hold I need without my fingers going up in the hole. The 54 single shot has a filled in flat bottom. Has anyone found a legal way to fill in that space while shooting? It would need to be something that would fit flush so there would be no advantage gained over what the rules allow. my magazines now seat just inside the bottom of the stock. Any help would be appreciated.

The magazine floorplate is removable... You could carve / mold / form a custom extension that would fill the opening and attach it to the bottom of the magazine. Keep in mind that any upward pressure on the magazine while cycling the action could cause a problem with feeding. Also, if the magazines don't routinely drop free of the rifle it could get to be a problem if it fit too close.

Thanks for the response, that is exactly what I have in mind. I just want to make sure I won't be protested all the time, and also see if anyone else has already done this. I would love to have someone with the ability to work alumn. make 2 of them. I think a knob on each end that would touch the action screws would keep the height right, and keep the mag. from being pushed up. Anyone of our gifted shooters out there reading? thanks

I guess that is a real problem when your finger goes in the hole. My old hold was with my thumb on the trigger guard and of my fingers going ahead of the hole. My new hold is resting the trigger guard on the palm of my hand. I have had that McMillan stock since 1991 and haven't been bothered by the hole.

If you have trouble getting the magazine out, you can push on the top of it and it will pop out.

Jerry how long have you been using the new hold? Where do the fingers go now? Do you think this will be a long term from the results you see now? Do you have any pix with that hold? Wow, didn't know I had so many questions. thanks ps I don't have any problem with mag. coming out now. I just need relief from trying to hold onto edges so as to not go into the hole.
