Proud of my Son

I decided to get my son involved in smallbore silhouette shoting as he is 13 now. He has never really shot a rifle in his life yet he is picking up this sport quickly. The last match we shot in April in Danville, IN he shot a 17 the first match and a 14 the second. The crazy thing was that i shot a 14 the first and 17 the second, which tied us for 1st place B division. In the shoot off he nailed the first Pig with a center shot. But in the next round I hit and he missed. But I have to say, I was amazed at how well he did and the fact that he did not choke in the shoot off.

Well, two weeks ago I bought him an air rifle and we started practicing in the basement. On paper targets he's averaging 22-25 so I am really excited to see how he will do in the two upcoming matches we have this Sat and Sun (LeRoy, IL and Beloit, WI).

I'll have to post some pictures soon of our .22 rifles and his new Crosman Challenger air rifle.

CJ, Thank you for taking the time to bring your son into any shooting sport. I have enjoyed my years of competition with my son, who can kick my butt when he wants to. Nothing like the feeling of having your child beat you, even Pat Steiger will agree with that! The memories of travels with my boy to different matches, the experience and family that he grew up knowing is coming out daily in watching him now as he struggles with college and the real world, but he is mature handles most things well. The shooting he misses, but he will come to the one great match this year, the Southern Nationals.

I hope you and your son have found a new past time to enjoy. My father taught me to shoot very young and I got involved with shooting seriously shortly after he passed several years ago and it is nice to know that I owe him for my love of the sport of shooting. If it wasn't for parents introducing their kids to shooting no kids would shoot at all as it is one of those things where the kid can not do it alone even if they really want to without the parents support.

While I am new to this site, and have never shot a silhouette match in my life, I do have a son whom I taught to appreciate the sport of shooting. I, along with my dad, started him out at about age 5 with a BB-gun. He now frequently (almost always) out-performs me at the range. Now in the military (in Iraq), he is an expert marksman. And, though he doesn't carry a sidearm in the Army, he is awesome with a pistol. I love to watch him in a match!

When I was in my late teens and early twenties, I could shoot the primer out of a (spent) 12Ga. shotgun shell at thirty paces, shooting offhand with open sights. Since life in general has robbed me of practice time, and I don't see quite as well as I used to, I can't quite do that any more. But I still love to shoot, and have been giving serious thought to silhouette shooting.

Absolutlely be proud of your son. We have to many missing in action dads in the world today. I have never had a bumper sticker on a vehicle, but I saw one recently that if I find I will put on my car. "THe man who hunts with his sons, doesn't have to hunt his sons". Kudos to all who include their families in their shooting or hunting sports!!!!!!!!!

revmed59, come on out, there are more than one of us that don't see quite as well as we used to but we still have fun. Watching the youngsters learn and progress is more fun than being able to repeat your youthful accomplishments.
