Kimber Classic Varmit For Hunter Class

Hi, I am considering purchasing a mint condition Kimber Classic Varmit rifle. I noticed in the hunter class class rules that bull and varmit barrels are not permitted. However, the owner of the rifle says the Kimber classic hunter is legal. Does anyone know the correct answer. If the rifle is legal, how does it compare to a Anshutz 1712 Silhouette. Thanks,

I would suggest email to the NRA for that sort of clarification : [email protected]

In the official rule book it only states "a hunting style contoured barrel that tapers from chamber to muzzle".
Specifically it states that "Bull barrels are not allowed".
Some "bull" barrels can be slightly tapered.


Personally, I don'y have a clue if yours would be legal or not.

How much does the barrel taper, what does the rifle weigh with magazine and how much do your scope & rings weigh? A lot of heavy barrel rifles weigh too much for hunter class, so surviving the barrel debate may be moot.

I shoot one of these for my standard gun, only because I have the trigger set to one pound. It is legal to use as a hunter due to its tapered barrel. The 21" stainless barrel is .960 diameter at the breech and tapers down to .680 at the muzzle. As shown with a Leupold 6.5-20x EFR and Leupold steel rings and bases it weighs in at 8.35 lbs, just under the 8.5 lb. maximum. This gun came with a .290 5 shot 50 yd. test target and still shoots that well with SK standard plus. The accuracy is a good as any Anschutz used in our game. My gun is a second generation M82C Kimber of America made in 1991. Hambone on this site is our resident Kimber expert, maybe he can add some comments, too.

Thanks Bob, but I only collect the KoO's and don't really shoot them. This particular KoA was always known as a superb shooter (I had one once with a .220 test target) A drawback would be the lack of parts availabilty, as that company is long gone. Otherwise a fine rifle for hunter class.

Jason, the picture you posted is exacting the rifle I am looking at for about $900. Is that a fair price? Someone mentioned that parts availability is a problem. Can get spare mags? How about a bolt?

Lastly, is the trigger adjustable, can it be turned down to 2 lbs. and how do you adjust the trigger. Unfortunately the guy who is selling the rifle has no paperwork on it. Thanks for the help.

tsnuzzo, the rifle in the picture that Jason supplied is the latest model produced by Kimber in New York. They stopped production a couple of years ago on all of their .22 rimfire rifles. Kimber is still in business making other guns. Parts and service for the .22 rifles should be no problem to obtain. Triggers are fully adjustable per the instruction manual which too can be supplied to you by Kimber. The $900. asking price sounds fair if in near new condition.
