I can't believe I am saying this, but I kind of miss shooting in AZ a little bit.

Not that much though!

I get to shoot in 3 smallbore silhouette matches every month here in CO. Ben Avery sure was a nice convenience and I only realize how nice it was now that I am living in the land of private gun clubs. If it weren't for the 3 matches a month I'd never get in any shooting!

Jerry, a guy up here in CO (Scott) had a pretty good analogy on flinching in high power due to recoil. He said that if you flinch due to anticipation of the recoil you are still going to get kicked by the rifle. Doesn't matter what you do, the rifle is still going to kick so you might as well NOT flinch and make the shot count. Kind of makes sense and make you think... if you flinch and make a bad shot you still get kicked for your effort.

My problem was not knowing it was me flinching. It was very slight. It was a bunch of erratic near misses. Of course after I was concious of it, and was nice and frustrated, I pulled 2 in a row down about 20 feet. Weeeee!
Now that I am aware of it, I at least know where to work on my scores.

Jerry, those scores are good for just starting out in HP. The conditions were difficult at times but a lot better than the last three AZ states. Those were very windy. Your a master class SB shooter. Apply all of your skills when picking up a center fire rifle. If you can beat the flinch you will be on your way to master in high power. Practice as much as you can afford to, you will get better.

As much as I would like to be there again in two weeks, these trips ain't cheap. Gas , food , lodging, entry fee, vacation days etc. ,etc. It really adds up in cost. And that 1700 mile round trip is not getting any easier. I am just starting to feel normal again after last weekend. Too much cost for a one day combination SB / HP match.

I will be at the Dynamite Shoot on the 1st and then back that night to run a HP match at CRC on Sunday 2nd. That in it self will be about 700 miles of driving just to shoot all weekend! Maybe I can persuade some of the CO shooters that have never shot explosives to join me. How about it guys? Two bucks a trigger pull but ten bucks paid out for every one hit. I always come home with more money than I left with. Easy money for blowing up dynamite stuffed pop cans!! Guns and dynamite...doesn't get any better than that.

If you are talking about the one I mentioned, it is called the Presidents Match held by the Arizona State Rifle and Pistol Association. It has two independent 40 shot matches. The Smallbore is held in the morning, the High-Power follows it.
It is held on May 2, 2010.

I shot better last year (in similar or worse conditions) and was a little happier with the results. My Standard rifle scores averaged over 21 in three matches, this year 13. That is where the frustration comes in. Knowing you can do better but the results are not there, and at the time not really knowing why. My Hunter Rilfe is not terrible this year overall, but a little disapointing at the State Championship. I shot a 22 earlier and two 16's at the State.

Knowing more about where the problem was will help me in the next match, I hope hahaha!

Jerry, my personal best and an event record I'm told was 21 hits back in '05. I was using one of the match grade 7-08's with 120 Sierras. It was dead calm all day and I was shooting well that day. It is like head shooting HP chickens. Usually there is some wind to deal with making it all the more difficult. I have come close to that number a few times since.

The offhand rifle line pays $10. per hit. If I remember it took about 60 shots to hit the 21targets. 60 shots @$2.00 each = $120.00 in tickets. 21hits @ $10. per hit = $210.00 in pay out. Profit was $90.00 for the day. It was enough to pay for the gas, lunch for two and a a couple of Dynamite Shoot tee shirts. And the fun factor...."priceless".

The benchrest shooter that hits one splits what ever was in the pot with the fire dept. This shooting event is a real.....BLAST.
