Advice needed on Anschutz model, barrel and action selection

Craig,

You need to get around to your local SSAA range on a Silhouette day,
have a butchers, and ask some questions.
You don't need to wait for your 1416 to arrive.
You will also need to sight it in well before you get to shoot a match.

You will learn more there, and meet the shooters as well.

I trust that you have a suitable scope to put on it.
You will need to see what's available and what you can afford.
Speak to the Silhouette shooters on the range.

Both classes are not normally shot concurrently.

You can shoot the Light (Sporter) Rifle (2lb trigger min and 8.5lb weight max) in the heavier Smallbore class, and no need to increase weight or change anything.

You only need 1 x 5 shot magazine, as you shoot banks of 5 targets in 2mins 30 secs, then ceasefire, and you get to reload the mag again on the ready for the next bank.

Wouldn't you know it, it takes a fine gentleman from NZ to answer the questions, me thinks the OZ guys are out for fun of training a newbie!!! You all should be ashamed of yourselves and go have another cup of Lady Grey Tea.
Craig, Sean has answered you well, one mag is all you need, it is nice to have a second mag in case something goes wrong with the first one. In American, Sean is right, go hang (out) with the 'girls' and they will guide you through. It will also give you the chance to look and see what you like and what is readily available in OZ before you buy.

Now I'm sure there will be some remarks made about my comments to the youngsters of OZ, but come out and have fun. Sean, glad to see you are still lurking about trying to keep us straight.

Thanks Mary and Sean, I will have to go down and watch a match before I get all of my bits and pieces together. Its a fair drive from where I live but ultimately I guess that if I am going to buy the gear and get down there regularly then I will need to make the trip and see what else I can find out before forking out all of the hard earned cash for something which may not be allowed.

Matches are usually shot with either 40 or 60 TOTAl shots with either 10 or 15 shots per animal. In a forty shot match you will shoot 10 shots at each animal with a 30 second rest between 5-shot strings. You could get by with one magazine if you reload during the 30 second rest period. It is easier to have 2 magazines for 10 shot strings per animal and 3 magazines for 15 shot strings per animal.

By the way, since you note the 28 day waiting period, you might be from Australia. I was wondering if they shoot rams first, then turkeys, then pigs, then chickens.

Boyd, If you have any contacts for an after-market or custom stock makers could you I please get you to pass on the details. I may be interested in something like that in the near future as importing a stock is no problems, its just the barrels, actions, triggers etc which are very heavily controlled both here in Australia(import) and from the USA (export). If I can find one ready made then I could get it fitted and finished off here. Unless I can find one locally.

There are a number of custom stock makers here in the states that have standard builds. At one time, Richards used to offer this option (right bolt, left cheekpiece) in stocks in various states of completion. A number of small independent gunsmiths can build stocks to specific dimensions. I use a local guy who has built me three stocks for silhouette. If the local option for a custom stock is limited, but importation is possible, then perhaps importing one is the way to go for a 1700 series based rifle assuming you're like me and want an excuse for another rifle.

Hi Craig,

most club matches will be for standard (i.e. heavy class), but you can use your hunting rifle (as is) in either class. The bonus of using one rifle only is familiarity, it can be used in either class (plus can also be used for ssaa field rifle and 3p). Also when you get to come to the state or national championships you will have one less rifle to carry/freight.

As far as mags go, I think one is plenty - some people like to have more, but I don't mind reloading between groups of five and there is more than enough time to do this. However, if you like, you could have two as you will normally fire ten shots before moving banks.

The final note is that our rules here are changing from 3.5kg to the NRA's somewhat heavier weight which is around 3.8kg (you should keep an eye on the ssaa website to see when this happens and to double-check the exact weight). When this changes all you will need to do is add some weight at the front and back (to achieve the balance you want) if you want to.
