Newby practicing

I got to practice for a couple hours today. At first I had to figure out my scope adjustments for each animal. I got close this morning and shot again this evening and fine tuned it a bit. I wanted to see if this sounds close to yall. I'm shooting SK standad+ ammo and my scope has 1/4 min adjustments. I zeroed on Chickens, then it was 10 up to Pigs, 10 up to Turkeys, then 16 up to Rams.

Pigs- +10 up
Turkeys- +10 up
Rams- +16 up

Just seemed odd that the first two were 10 exactly. I know things are going to change, but do these sound close. I'm going to a small club match this weekend and I'm trying to fine tune everything. I shot chickens this evening and hit 8 out of 10 the last try. I was excited. From my view through the scope it didn't look like I had a prayer. Very fun sport. I'm building my target racks tomorrow so I will hopefully get some good practice in.

Those settings look pretty good to me. In my 1712 with 25.5" barrel and Weaver T24, here are my settings from the last match.

C: 0
P: +2 1/2 minutes (10 clicks with 1/4 minute clicks)
T: +4 3/4 minutes (9 more clicks with 1/4 minute clicks)
R: +8 1/2 minutes (15 more clicks with 1/4 minute clicks)

Those are pretty close to what the adjustments usually are. The adjustments can very a click or two depending on weather, primarily temperature resulting in lower velocities needing a another click or two at turkeys and rams. I usually keep track of it in minutes instead of clicks because it's easy to glance at the knob and see minutes.

What was the temperature? Those look right for cold weather. Ok, cold for me is below 45.

jjp, the settings are about normal, they will vary with ammo, range, temperature, humidity, wind, lighting and all the other variables you can think of.
I agree with the other Jason, stick to minutes, and also note where your chicken zero is, in case you end up a full revolution off on elevation. Mine tends to be around the #3 on the lines.

Go make some pigs squeal...they are as much fun as making the chickens fly. Addictive isn't it?

It was in the 50'S when I first started this morning then it was in the high 60's with bright sun. They did seem a hair high this afternoon when it warmed up. I'm just glad it was in the ball park. I'm going to try it again in the morning.

0 minites for chickens,1.5 minutes if pigs are at 50m (a distance some ranges use when sharing with pistol), or 2 to 2.5 for 60m pigs, 4 to 5.5 minutes for Turkeys (ammo dependent here) and really ammo dependent on Rams (Wolf and SK tends to drop a lot more than Eley) at 8 to 9.5 for me. Yes as the temp and light gets brighter, so does the elevation of the shot. Then we can get into mirage....oh forget it, just have have fun and listen to the shooters and spotters around you, experiment with your own set up and you'll catch on to all the finer details. You'll miss a few, spin and turn a few and even make some jump and land back on their feet...all part of the game.

As Mary says, be cautious to not loose your chicken zero. Get into the habit of comparing your parallax setting to your elevation. Good way to remember where you left off.

Oh can we tell you stories.... How about more rail shot take down's then direct hits... LOL we know the person that has perfected that practice. The target setters need to make sure they don't hang the feet of them animals over the stand ;)

Not worried about rail shots, the ones that really pisses me off are the ones that go between the legs on the pigs or in the little hole on either side of the chicken leg, or of all places thru the hole in the rams horn.

I got to shoot for a while this morning before the rain. I took a bunch of notes on my parallax setting and adjustments. I'm liking my 1712 more and more. We shot our CZ 452's at 50 yards. Boy what a difference. I believe my dad got bit by the Annie bug this morning.
