Chin Gun?

Post by rbrandes »

So, I have never even seen a chin gun. Anyone know where I can find a photo? Google only brings up robots and B-17's...

Not much to see..my chin gun was my standard rifle with an off set high mount so that the only thing that changed was I now rested my chin on the comb of the stock and shot using my left eye instead of my right.

Sorry, that didn't work. They changed PhotoBucket. I'll have to re-learn this. To be continued.

Thanks Ppkny! A picture is worth a thousand words.
So, it looks like the scope and comb measurement rules are designed to prohibit this type of rifle in silhouette competition.

Boom there it is...very much like what I used...just a standard rifle with that same mount..no big deal....The problem came when shooters built up a third gun especialy as a chin gun and then the NRA banned them so they where left with a bastard gun good for nothing else unless they did extensive mods to turn it back into a standard gun. I was lucky I just slid off the off set mount and kept on truckin....unfortunatly I also had 3 legs for the grand slam and could not credit it to standard either...that sucks too.

If someone will walk me through how to put pix on here, I will send pix of stock made solely as a chin stock. It is crooked beyond belief and could no way be modified to use as a regular gun. The week I recieved mine, they were outlawed. I have new stock, never bedded.

Yeah I have seen those too...Those were the ones that became expensive furniture after they were banned..I feel bad for all those that went that way.

What years were they in use? When were they banned? Were they much of an advantage?

They broke them away into open class in the mid-90's, which faded away in a year or two. One thing that was nice about open class is that you could legally shoot a typcal rifle with a rail, as long as it made weight, like my Marlin 2000. What I ended up the next season was getting another stock from Marlin and had my smith mill it down to standard forearm limits.

This "chin gun" debacle is exactly why David Tubb no longer shoots silhouette. I've spoken to him several times about it and he had prototyped and built a really cool, modular stock made out of aluminum components. Just about the time he gets it perfected and ready to try to go commercial, the Silhouette committee decided to try to stay "traditional" as opposed to perhaps allowing an unlimited class.

On a side note, I think he has taken a few of his ideas and incorporated them into his T2K rifles, which now pretty much own NRA highpower rifle at the top levels.

LoneRinger may have been on the committee when the chin guns were banned, perhaps he'll educate us all.

Tom, the Chin Gun debacle is still a sore subject with a lot of shooters that had to give them up and I don't see a reason for opening the can of worms again since it will not do anybody any good on the other hand look at how far we've gone with the Hunting rifles we are able to use now. I know that is not what you wanted to hear from me but I am not interested in rehashing the past regarding the use of Chin Guns in rifle silhouette.

Tony, I must have mis-stated my thought. I was thinking you could fill in the time-lines, not the debate particulars. As a 7 year member of the NRA's Highpower committee I know exactly the pressure members get from all angles, and with over 45,000 classified shooters you can guess the number of opinions we heard! Plus, committee deliberations are best not made internet fodder== that would only make the members less likely to be blunt and honest intheir opinions.

I agree there are still some hard feelings, mostly over the money spent on gear that was pushing the envelope too far. I never shot a chin gun personally, though I have heard they were quite solid, and I am well aware of the advantages of being able to can't pistol grips\trigger mechs too. Some of the new 'space gun' AR's we see in NRA HiPower have the same features as early chin guns in that respect.

I'm surprised we have gone to 'franken hunters' in the 9 years since I last competed in silhouette, and though I'm not handicapped by my 1710D, I can see the advanatages in a Pharr stocked, single shot 54.18 actioned "hunter" rifle as opposed to an out of the box CZ or 14 series Annie.

Still, I enjoy the competition, and the camaraderie silhouette shooters share. Where else can you show up to a match and have your competition spot and call wind for you? I can't think of anyplace.

I couldn't see a problem with the off the shelf 8.5 lb gun, except length of pull. But the Big $$ folks got to the committee somehow. Around the time of the chin gun being banned from Standard, two stage triggers were made illegal in Hunter. I called Greg Connor at the time and he said that folks [cheaters] were mis-assembling Anschutz 54 sporter parts to achieve somehow a two stage effect. Because of high-end cheaters, previously legal hunter rifles with two stage triggeres were outlawed. I had almost purchased a Mauser 202, which became banned in hunter by this overreaching rule change. Now things have slid the other way with Frankenhunters.
