Mini Kitty Deer Harvest

Post by jneihouse »

Youth hunt here in Arkansas for the weekend. Kolby spent the time guiding Mallory on her first deer hunt. Hunted hard yesterday, windy saw nothing. Did catch some catfish though. Today they hunted hard and about 5 o'clock this nice little buck came walking in. Kolby whistled him to stop and Mallory shot him. Frontal shot, 85 grain Sierra Game King over 35 grains of Varget from her .243. Took out the heart and lungs, deer went 40 yards and dropped. One shot, one deer. Not the biggest every but a big accomplishment for an a couple of pretty neat kids. Deer was 120 yds out when Mallory squeezed the shot off. Made extra special also because she loaded (under my supervision) the round she took him with. All in all a pretty good day.

Thought I'd share this with my shooting family.

120 yards through the heart is an awfully good shot! Whatever happened to buck fever?!

You'll notice that, like any true southern lady would, Mallory hunted in earrings that set off her camo perfectly lol...So much for the face paint and that sort of thing...course he never got close enough to see the earrings......

The florescent pink nail polish was quite nice as well. No doubt for safety reasons as well.

Now a young lady has to look good for her first hunt...and everyone after that.

He'll get it next time...Mini Kitty had the advantage of who knows how many rimfire rounds fired this summer offhand at silhouettes all over the country and shooting highpower with her deer rifle at Zwolle. Has to have made a difference. Kolby said she called her shot and was right on the money...probably would have pointed it out on a spotting board if they had one with a deer on it.. :)

Also can't say enough good about the .243 for deer. I had no experience with it on live animals and will admit that I was a little worried that the ammo we had put together would let her down, but it didn't The little bullet completely devastated the chest cavity and did not exit, rather dumped all it's energy into the animal....didn't overpenetrate into the stomach/intestine area and broke 3 ribs on the offside, as the deer was slightly at a quartering angle....however, the little 85 grain bullet does suck on highpower rams...leads to one hacked off 11 year old..."Next year Papa were're coming back and I'm bringing more gun"...

So it's a good thing for Mallory the deer was "only" 120 yards, and bad planning by the deer to get closer than 500? Sounds like she doesn't get mad, just even...

Now BB, she just didn't want the animal to suffer..... nothing about getting even, she is too cool for that.
