I would explore other ways of losing weight before hacking on the gun.....The aluminum shroud is good...but I would not cut up the rifle.

I talked with Evelio McDonald the other day about the same thing. He is building a 10-1/2 lb BR rifle and needed to cut weight. He cut the bolt handle for a small aluminum knob and he only saved 1/2 oz.
You can cut the back of the bolt handle and save around another 1/2 oz. If you look at the titanium actions that Remington made the back of the bolt handle is mill out. One of my first Remington 40x smallbore rifles I built had the back of the bolt knob and handle milled out. I add a Kenyon trigger to a gun that was close to the weight limit and had to mill on the handle to get it back under.

Good luck, Paul

Evelio had to hollow out the stock on my Stiller single shot, trim the barrel a couple of times and use aluminum rings. I had to hollow out the stock on a 504T and swap in a tapered Lilja to get that one into Hunter class, and use aluminum rings again - and that action is already light. I'm not a machinist or gunsmith so I don't modify metal parts beyond "screwdriver swaps" - at least not anymore. :ymblushing:

How much do you need to lose? What scope are you using?

If you replace the steel bolt shroud with an aluminum one and replace the (factory) steel firing pin with one of the light weight ones that David sells (which is desirable anyway) you will probably lose somewhere between 2 and 3 ounces.

After that, the cheapest way is always to shorten the barrel.

Fluting the bolt does not lose much weight.

Barrel fluting is an uncertain proposition. If it is a factory barrel, I would not attempt to flute it. A good aftermarket barrel might come out OK, but there is always the risk that fluting a barrel will turn it into the proverbial "tomato stake".

Depending upon what stock you will be using there may be a very few ounces that can be taken off of it, but the barrel is the major target for losing weight in my experience.

let me try to add more light to this this is a 40x rimfire i am talking about as for working on the barrell nope aint going to happen 4 groove 16.5 twist shilen strait taper with DEEP flutes all the way from reciever to with in about 2in of muzzle muzzle dia of .750 high dollar barrell and shoots damn near any ammo 1in at 100 meter and lots of stuff 1/2in and that is all cheap ammo too boot!!
what am trying to do is gather info and ideas on lighten up thinks to see if i can get it into hunter class first do the make and alum. schroud for 40x rimfire ? going to change steel bases and rings to talley light weight lose about 3oz. there (yes i have a very accurate scale) the scope is leupold 6-18x40 vx-II with stoney point knob on elevtion only =15oz .8 oz lighter then target of same make could lose about .5oz if went to fx-III 25 or 30 i got the basics covered i am looking for "hidden weight loss" so to speak to see how much i can get out to figure out what my stock needs to weigh ?
so was the bolt with the back side holled out lighter then one with aluim. knob put on ? nto trying to be rude just trying to answer all ? and not very good with typing or computers any ideas helpful and any one here used a lone wolf stock ?

Ouch.... wood alone will not gain that much you may have to look at barrel modifications to gain that much.

See how much weight it loses with the Talley rings and talk to Evelio about his shoe crepe recoil pads (very light). If Lone Wolf is in-letting and bedding the stock for you, make sure they know of your concerns so they can make the right choices. They may be able to hollow the stock or make other suggestions.

Someone else will know the answer to this, but if the 40x has a recoil lug and there is a titanium or aluminum replacement, that would save several ounces without altering the action.

With an aluminum shroud , one of PTG's fluted aluminum strikers, and Mark's stock with NO pad, my CMP 40X makes weight with a Weaver 24. BBL shortened to 23". The stock, when you work at it, will come in at 23oz with bedding and hardware. Titanium strikers are hard to find... Don Crawford in Pa. used to make 'em but not anymore. I bought a stick of Ti with a local guy promising to do the work... didn't. Anyone wanting a 4' ($140) stick of Ti to play with sign up now....

By "straight taper" on that barrel, did you mean that it doesn't taper at all? If so, isn't that going to prevent qualification for hunter class regardless of weight?

I have an aluminum firing pin for a Remington 40x. I believe that my smith ordered it from PTG, they should be able to provide a complete firing pin assymbly with an aluminum shroud. As far as the aluminum shroud one from a 700 remington will work with a little modification and would save at least 1-1/2 oz. Were the 700 shroud has the threads and then a flat about 1/2" long the 40X rimfire stops at the threads. I will pull one tonight and put it next to a 700 firing pin assymbly so you can see the difference.

Here is a picture with a description of what would need to be done. Let me know if you would like to see the 40x firing pin next to the 700.
