FS Remington 540XR Target, Voelker tuned, Weaver T-36 w/ring

Post by hags »

Remington 540XR Target, Excellent condition, rifle was purchased from original owner's estate unfired!!

It is in immaculate condition. Bluing is 99%, metal is 99%, wood is 98%, some small, very light, handling marks, please see pictures.

It is all orignal, all screws including the action screws are pristine, no marred screwheads.

The original factory crown left alot to be desired, it was off center and not chamfered. I sent it off the Brian Voelker for him to work his magic. The barrel was slugged and recrowned, it slugged tight just before the old crown so minimal material was removed. Also, the trigger has a Voelker trigger job and is adjustable down to 9 oz or so. It is currently set at 11 oz.

To say this rifle shoots is an understatement. The two targest shown in the pictures are a 10 round .300 group and a 5 round .133 group!!!!

This rifle easily shoots under 1/2" @ 50 yards and .2s and .3s are the norm with the higher end ammo.

I have shot a best 5/8", 5 shot group at 100 yards with this set up.

These groups were shot with RWS Target Rifle ammo, which is what I shoot most of the time. I would consider this a mid-level grade ammo on par with Wolf Match Target.
The rifle shoots a variety of ammo well including Wolf MT, Wolf ME, Federal 711-B, RWS Rifle Match , RWS Target Rifle, Eley Match and Eley Tenex.

Asking price as shown, with the Anschutz rings and Weaver T-36 is $950

Asking price for the rifle alone is $600.

Buyer pays actual shipping from 60081 via UPS Ground Insured.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but will the 540 XR with scope and rings be legal in standard class for silhouette? Some of the target guns go way over 10 1/2 pounds with a scope and rings. I have a BSA that is over 11 with iron sights.

I don't think it will fit the jig or make weight

That stock does not conform to the rules. It is too deep in fron of the trigger guard. I have seen them cut down to fit the jig; but that was in the stone ages of silhouette.

Neither did I, but would that ever be a sweet add to my Remington locker...

Im sure with alittle love this will make an excellent Sil rifle. Our Junior rifle program has 20 of these and i can personally give these my seal of approval, its a great little rifle and tack driver out to 100. :D

I just don't see how. It can't make weight or rules without replacing the stock and the barrel, completely destroying the character of a beautiful classic! I'd have a hard time doing it.

As previously mentioned, back in the stone age of silhouette it was not uncommon to see these with the forend cut down in front of the trigger guard and a piece of wood attached to the rear end in place of the adjustable butt plate so that they would fit the stock dimensions. I shot one as a standard rifle for a lot of years but I put mine in a Fajen silver maple thumbhole silhouette stock, it easily made weight.

By the way what ever happened to all of those Fajen thumbhole stocks that used to be on the line, there has to be a boatload of them setting around in closets. To my mind they were one of the best designed silhouette stocks on the market. Even now when you do see the occassional one and a shooter who has never been exposed to one picks it up their reaction is generally - WOW!!! - what a great stock.

good shooting - drover

True. its a great lil rifle. but probably better served as a prone or 3-p rifle.
