REM. MODEL 5

anyone have experience with this rifle? how does it compare to a savage MKII or cz452 as far as accuracy at 100 /200 yards? there is going to be a sale in my area on the model 5 for 189.99, but i have been saving up for a cz. i'll be using the rifle for silhoutte and 100 / 200 yard competitions.

They have a reputation closer to the CZ 452 and are probably solid values right now. The down side is parts availability, especially magazines, and the laminate stock weight. These actions were manufactured by Zastava, imported by Remington and installed into what are probably Boyd's stocks.

Check the Remington section on Rimfire Central for several good threads on these rifles. My understanding is that Zastava is trying to establish themselves as an independent brand name in the USA after going through several cycles as a house brand.

that's the thing, i have cabela points to use up, plus an extra mailer for 20.00 off for a purchase over 120.00. i just called my "local" cabelas (about 1.5 hours away), the guy said i can use both the points and the 20.00 off toward the rifle.

with tax and registration, should be about $175.00. although i love my mkii, i think i hit the accuracy wall and can't get much more out of it. i was saving up for a cz, but when i seen this remington, it caught my eye for a dedicated silhoutte set up. can't seem to find anyone that has good grouping #'s past 50 yards though.

trying to get on rf central, but my log on info is messed up.

biggest thing is i don't mind passing this up and going with the cz for the extra $, but if the model 5 is close, i'll take a trip on saturday to get it. just not convinced yet, so if you guys have any other opinions, reviews, or experience with it i'd appreciate it.

i don't want to have a "should've bought a cz" moment.....

A reason to buy the CZ is after market parts; for me, that means particularly the Timney trigger. Otherwise, the CZ and the Model 5 are very comparable.

thanks for the information, do you think it's close enough to justify a close to 300.00 less to pay for the mod. 5?

is it close enough quality / feel wise to the cz?

if you've had any experience with a savage mkii, would you say the model 5 is more accurate?

sorry for all the questions, seems you are knowledgeable about rifle (i'm having a hard time finding real world info on it), and at 175.00 out the door, i don't want to pass up the oppurtunity, but i also don't want to waste my time with the model 5.

I would recommend the CZ for the following reasons -

1. If in the future you wish to go to a different rifle the CZ is a sought after rifle and will be easy to sell.
2. The CZ can be used as a Hunter class rifle and make weight with the Varmint model if you prefer to go close to the weight limit (this may require taking into consideration what you are using for a scope and mounts since it is close to the weigth limit).
3. If you prefer a lighter weigth rifle then the sporter (American) is also available.
4. The CZ can have a very good 2# trigger using the Brooks trigger kit.
5. There is an availability of adjustability and aftermarket triggers for the CZ.
6. The CZ has a known reputation for accuracy.
7. I have never encountered a Model 5 being used for silhouette, I have handled one in a store and it felt ill balanced, for off-handed shooting, it just didn't feel as substantial as the CZ, strictly my feeling on the balance issue, others may find it diffent.
8. The CZ is based on the BRNO which has been in production for over 60 years and has an envialble reputation for accuracy.
9. If I had to get rid of my other 22's and only have one 22 rifle then my pick would be the CZ.

I have shot silhouette for many years and am a Master class shooter, while I do not shoot a CZ in competition I have played with them enough, and have one that I use for a hunting 22. Generally speaking they serve most shooters very well, especially considering that they can be had for around $350 and to step up any further will require going to the over $1000 price.

Agree with drover....I've shot all 3...keep saving for the CZ...you'll be glad you did...buy once, cry once.

Agree with drover...I've shot the CZ's, even have a few around for loaners. Great rifles.
