Noob Questions

I'm interested in shooting some small bore matches and silhouette looks like it would be a blast.

What I'm wondering is: what is the typical course of fire for a match and what are the restrictions on gear?

I have a Anschutz 64 Silhouette, 6x burris compact on it.

plexreticle, you don't say where you are from but most match directors let shooter shoot what they brung! And seven views and no responses...what up SC regulars you all asleep...me I am just getting ready to become technically disadvantaged.

The rifle/scope weight restrictions in rough overview are Standard class 10 pounds 2 ounces, no trigger limits. Hunter rifle/scope 8.5 pounds, with two pound trigger pull.
No slings, gloves or jackets. Light vests are allowed, as long a a 4" PVC can be inserted with the vest fully zipped.

THe Annie 64 is a great action, depending on which stock it is in and what the trigger is set for may or may not make both rifle catagories.

As far as your rifle is concerned, Mary is spot-on about most match directors and their patience and flexibility to encourage and keep new shooters. In most cases, if you don't have a gun to make Hunting Rifle weight, many shooters will loan you a rifle.

If you like a challenge for you and your abilities and not so much of an equipment race (good equipment is nice though), then this is your game. Fragile egos need to be checked at the range gate.

Thanks for the replies, I'm in Austin TX. The Austin Rifle Club used to hold matches I guessing they still do.

I'm going to check it out for sure.

I was interested in the reply to this thread myself. I shot my first match a couple of weeks ago with 8 out of 40. It seemed to be more of a fun match where people didn't seem too concerned about rifle weights or trigger pulls. The no sling, glove, jacket rule was observed.

I'm hooked an intend to do it again this weekend.

Visible disqualifications, like a bull barrel in hunter class, are usually called but we don't have technical inspections. When a major match is coming up, we do pull out the trigger weights and scales to make sure there's no awkwardness later, but otherwise it's pretty loose.

I've never had a match director not allow me to shoot and my rifle is illegal for silo in more ways then there is space to post. I use my biathlon rifle which for starters has too much drop from centerline, a lift beneath the trigger guard, too light a trigger, and an overhooked buttplate just to name a few. The rifle has aperture sights and those 1/5 targets can be tough to keep track of so I take a few penalties. The match directors in NH are fantastic about allowing shooters to participate. I'm happy they allow me to shoot. Silo has improved my offhand skills and if I end up on the scoresheet, great. If not, I know what I shot and keep track trying to outshoot myself each match. Just shot a best of 17 (1/5) this past weekend managing to hit at least one animal per bank and managed to hit 5 turkeys which I was super psyched about. After a run of the 1/5 targets I usually take a pass at the club targets which is a run what ya brung catch all. I'll shoot 1/5 first since running the sights up and down w/o a place to recheck zero I can add in a bit of error which matters less on the larger targets. In NH, I've noticed as long as you're safe and have good range procedures they encourage participation regardless of the rifle as long as it won't damage the target.
