Chuck, look forward to having someone from out of town. I hope you still have your 1712 Pharr stocked rifle to shoot the 1/5th animals with us. Where are you traveling from?

Let me take a moment and give you an overview of how the New England matches are run. Volunteers show up around 8 to set up animals. That is quite a job. At pioneer we set up 80 1/2 scale pistol cartridge animals, 80 1/2 scale rimfire animals and 80 1/5 scale rimfire animals. 240 animals in total! Needless to say that is work. Then folks sign up at the stat shack and purchase as many score sheets as they plan to shoot. Given we have both pistol and rifles on the line there are 8 NRA guns you could shoot. Plus we have a scoped club rifle and iron sight club rifle category which is not NRA sanctioned but each of the three clubs runs the same rules so folks can shoot at the 1/2 scale with scopes and irons. A bit more forgiving and people like to hit things. So that is 8 + 2 club rifle options.

Background: Iron sight rifles shoot at thin 1/2 scale animals. Scoped, if you are an expert, you shoot at the Pistol Cartridge (thick) animals. If you are new to the sport, you shoot at the 1/2 scale rimfire (thin) animals. What this means is experts have to hit the ram in head/horn area if you want it to fall down, a little more of a challenge. It also serves as a good practice round before you attack the 1/5th scale guys.

It can be a tad overwhelming to a first timer with so many types of guns all schooting at the same time. Smallbore next to centerfire. Pistols next to rifles. Heck, at my first match in Texas I was overwhelmed and we were effectively just shooting at 1/2 scale thin targets aka "fun match" in Texas, aka "club rifle" in NH. Same thing. Good way to get folks started.

The good news, you can shoot a bunch from about 9 until about 3 or when the crowd thins out. Today I just shot SBR and SBHR and then helped call the line. Others shoot 5 or 6 guns. You can show up whenever as we shoot IMSA style. Showing up at 1 wanting to shoot 5 rifles is generally poor form but match directors always try to accomodate anyone who shows up.

Look forward to meeting you. See you both days I suspect. Pemi just put on a great match today. 21 people showed. On average I would estimate each one shot 3.5 guns. Their match is almost identical except that they put up 120 animals, one of each. Purgatory is the same. Pioneer has enough racks for 240 and as such holds the Granite State Regional which you should try to make. Two days of a lot of shooting. 80 shots at SBR, SRHR, SCR, PCCLA plus scoped club rifle and iron sight club rifle. 480 rounds in two days!

Are the NH matches shot at meters or yards?
I did keep the 1712, nothing like the Pharr. Was going to use my Weatherby, but the 1712 is the answer.
Does Pemi shoot all disiplines SBR, SBHR or just cowboy/lever action?
I passed on a 3x600 HP match today to practice with the 1712.

Of the three clubs they all offer the same format...generally. That means brand new state of the art SBR and SBHR rifles right next to 100 year old Winchester lever guns. It is kinda cool to see such an array of equipment all on the line at the same time.

The bonus is Pemi holds the Cowboy Lever Action match that neither Purgatory nor Pioneer can host because both clubs are maxed at 100m. Pemi is working on building interest in 200 meter CLA and folks are getting the equipment they need and figuring out bullets and powder. These CLA matches are always held independent of the other disciplines. Thus my discription all disciplines except CLA. Trying to make it clear yet condensed.

All distances are in meters except where some of the cowboy/pistol distances are in yards which is the norm. SCR/PCCLA pigs are 50y vs SBHR/SBR where it is 60m. You can play both the 1/5th scale SBHR/SBR as seriously as you want or you can play cowboy as seriously as you want. Or both at all matches. Personally, I would love to have more 1/5th shooters on the line. I held 5 extra NRA approved 1/5th only matches at Pioneer last year, squaded, 60 shot. I had about 6 shooters at each match. It is a big time commitment to tie up an entire weekend in the summer to hold a match for 6 shooters. I did not get anything approved by the NRA this year. If there was interest I would have another run at it.

As for HP, Pemi has the steel and the potential to put out animals. But it all comes down to interest and folks helping. These matches are not money making events. It takes a fair amount of sweat to get things going. If only 6 show up at a 1/5th match I doubt many more would show up at a HP match. In short, I don't think we will see HP any time soon. We will have to drive to PA for that.

Jud, i put the CZ back in the original stock so as not to waste the summer! i was starting to rush and i think i will turn the restocking into a winter project.
