Anschutz 1712 trigger problem?

Post by CoastDog »

I have a 1712 for hunter class. It has been working great until yesterday. I chambered a round and put the bolt down and the firing pin followed! Panic set in. What I eventually found was the sear was not resetting. However with the bolt up if I pulled the trigger the sear would reset and everything worked as it should. As long as I lifted the bolt pulled the trigger and put the bolt back down it was as normal.
 So what happened? I can see nothing broken or missing in the housing. I touched nothing and it happened suddenly. I readjusted the trigger and same problem. Any one have an idea what the problem might be? Has this happened to anyone else? Great rifle I hope I can get it sorted out. Thanks, Al

Trigger

Sounds to me like a broken firing pin, take the bolt apart, and check everything.

The firing pin looks okay. Nothing seperated nor any chiped parts.
In the trigger when the sear releases one piece slips reward. That piece is captured by the other sear piece. They end up sitting on top of each other. If the bolt is lifted and lowered again the two sear pieces remain on top of each other. And the sear does not reset. When the bolt is lifted and the trigger pulled again those pieces seperate and a spring returns one piece forward. when the bolt is now closed the two sears meet and will release when the trigger is pulled.
Not a great explination, but if you have been into these triggers you may know what I am talking about. I am not a gunsmith, so don't know the exact name of each piece.
Seems to me when the bolt is lifted the two sear pieces should seperate allowing the one piece to move forward as it does when the trigger is pulled with the bolt up.
I do have a manual and have checked adjustments which seem to be correct. It is a single stage trigger.

I have the same sort of problem with one of my single stage triggers. It turns out there is a broken torsional spring in the trigger that is supposed to reset the sear when the trigger is released. The hook on the end is broken off. I need to send it off and get the spring replaced.

Here's a link that has diagrams of several Anschutz triggers. It opens a large .pdf file (about 14MB) so beware. Diagrams

That's what I was thinking it was Jeff, but I know Neal would know as soon as he described it.

I suspect that it what jeff59 said - I have had it happen twice on 1710 sporters, when I called Neal Johnsons about it they knew exactly what spring I was talking about and they had them in stock. They are not difficult to replace if you are mechanically inclined.

 okay, sounds reasonable. I will have a closer look and see if I can spot a broken spring in there. I am mechanically inclined, just haven't had an Anschutz trigger apart. Worth a try anyway. Thanks for the input. Al

Anyone know what trigger this would be? I haven't been able to nail it down. Anschutz has so many and they are all really different. 5108 sound right?

After looking at the diagram for the 1710D looks like it is a 5096 trigger with the safety on the bolt.

Got it figured out. On diagram for mod 1710 D spring number (49)5091-9, a hair spring, had come unseated. I moved it a bit and it hung up in a different spot putting a lot more tension on the catch link (50) 5091-4/1. After a number of tries the bolt cocks as it should.
I'll see how long this lasts. Maybe I got lucky here. thanks for the help.
