Remington model 5

I was at the gun store this past weekend and they had a Remington model 5 in the rack. I thought it appeared to be a decent .22, but I have not seen anyone use one in a match.

Does anyone here have experience with the Rem. model 5? How does it compare to the CZ 452?

Charles Daly originally sold them in the United States, but flushed a lot of them through the channel cheap when Remington got import rights. So the Model 5 started off cheapened and trying to compete head on with the CZ 452 and just never got much traction. Both rifles are built in Czechoslovakia, but by different companies.

Given a choice between the two, I'd go with a CZ 452 because they are better understood by shooters and gunsmiths.

I bought a Charles Daly to use for a ranch rifle. It shoots really well off the bench and the metal finish is really well done - better than CZ.

It's built very similar to a Winchester model 69. I think the adjustable trigger metalurgy isn't up to snuff to maintain a safe, crisp trigger. I don't have a very high opinion of the magazines either and had trouble with jamming when I first got mine. Jamming was a extractor issue.

Shooting freehand, it balances well but I haven't done much with it other than shoot water rats and drag it around in the golf cart. Yee haw.

I ended up ordering a CZ American as they are pretty and I know it will shoot. My only complaint on the CZ's are their ugly trigger guards. Does anyone make an attractive replacement?

There was an outfit casting some handsome replacements, but they were pricey and I've lost that link. Someone on the CZ forum over at Rimfire Central would know.
