What stone do you use for final finish on a triggerjob?

I've got a little triangular ultra-fine Arkansas stone that I've been using to put the finishing touches on triggerjobs for the last few years and it's gotten to the point that it has a couple small chips on each edge thanks to it getting dropped or not held perfectly square like it should be in my unpracticed hands. Instead of just ordering up another, I thought it would be better to come here and ask what you folks that actually know what you're doing use. So what do you use for a typical "smooth and lighten" trigger job like Byron needs done on his Marlin 39a (simplest job I can think of)?

It's not just for you. I still need to do a triggerjob on my M12 that I use for prone, and that 336 that I use for centerfire cowboy is rough indeed. I'd probably be through the heattreated part before I smoothed it out really well, though. If those Marlin 57 triggers weren't such a pain to work on, I might make that latest one my winter project and do a full pillar bed and trigger job on it. That might be the only lever gun design that a traditional pillar bed job would help, having that one-piece stock and all. I've got to do something to make one of those 22lr model 57s shoot like the 22 magnum or just finally give up on them. I've got four of them and none shoot like that 57M that I got and started the addiction. Oh well. If I don't have the right stone(s), I have an excuse for not getting off my lazy arse and doing the work.

Dang Jason, if he's holding up your trigger job over a new stone, get a him a new one for Christmas! Heck, a friend like that deserves a whole set and another project to practice them on!

Byron, part of the problem in getting a reply is that very few of us know, because very few of us have done trigger jobs! Every rifle I've owned over the last several years came with a trigger that needed very little help and before that a brother did the work for spare parts and tools. Which is how I know about stone sets!

I think you misunderstand. We're in the final stages of dragging Byron over into cowboy silhouette, too. As part of that temptation, I'm helping him get set up. It's the same "drug dealer" model that sucked most of us in, most likely.

Jason, I normally dont share my machining secrets to just anyone. I have mastered the use of this tool for supurb trigger jobs. Byron will love the feel on that 39 when your finished.
