Mark , congrats on the lasting relationship. You may someday get that 39A back....it happens.
My spending habits in my early years of shooting were curtailed alot when I first met my wife. All of a sudden the extra money had to go towards things like flowers, candy, movie tickets and countless other trinkets a young man in love dumps on a woman. Met her in '72, a year after I was out of H.S. Never had any time for girls in HS, too much shooting and hunting to do. Frankly, all I had on my mind was guns anyway....(well, I still do.)
She was from a family that had no gun folk in it. They were not anti's in any way. She actually took alot of interest in my budding collection of guns and shooting with me. We got hitched in 1974. Later in life, she started hunting with me on a regular basis. Her first ever hunt was 18 years ago. She nailed a nice mulie buck. We have hunted together every year since.
We have been together for 36 years now. She still fully supports my severe addiction to the shooting sports. Life IS good.

Unlike many of you I've never been a hunter and was raised in a small city, but with trips to the farm my father grew up on. Dad would turn us loose with a single shot .22 or pellet gun and a pocket full of ammunition while he worked the garden or planted trees. Later, we had a three shot .410, mostly for scaring crows, and Little Brother and I would take turns missing things. For a country boy, pop knew nothing about guns so those poor things were never sighted in or cleaned, and they've all vanished into Youngest Brothers "gun smithing" misadventures.
After high school there was the Marines and my first formal marksmanship training, followed by a long time when I wouldn't touch a gun. .22's were something for sunnier, innocent times and I needed to keep it that way - some of you that were in the military may understand that.
I waited too late with my sons, and even though they tried to humor me they just weren't interested. But .22's still made me happy and I went with that.
My favorite rifle is Rainy Day Annie - an Anschutz 1712 with far too much character. Her stock, a McMillan, was donated by Kitty as a well worn relic, Ed Kessey sold me the action, the scope is a vintage 24x42 Leupold purchased here (Leupold just replaced the objective lens, no charge, and it's sharper than ever!) and the rings are polished aluminum, drop compensated, also donated by Kitty. Evelio fixed the bedding and recoil pad, and Northwest Hydroprint dipped it a brick red rain drop pattern. She's got everything else in the gun locker terrorized, and I'm afraid to shoot anything else without her permission.
After Benton, Evelio's going to replace her Anschutz bottom metal with a piece from Marv to fix a magazine clearance problem, so she'll come back with more attitude than ever. I like things that have a story and this rifle is several, and at Benton she'll face off with Innocent Mary for another chapter.

My birthday is a few days before Christmas. I think I was 9 or 10, I took my birthday money to the Western Auto in our small town and bought a toy rifle, it was a lever action shaped like a 94 and it had a plastic case with a spring inside of it and it had plastic bullets with like a stem on them that you pushed into the case and they would shoot out of the gun. Well my Mom kept finding broken Christmas ornaments laying around the tree, till finally she caught me busting one and then my butt got warmed for that one. My older sister was napping on our couch in the living room with a blanket covering everything on her except for her feet, I took a bead on her big toe and let her fly, she woke up screaming straight to my Mom. The noise she made you would have thought that I hit her toe with a sledge hammer instead of a plastic bullet, anyway first my rear got busted and then the gun got busted, so much for that!

I just got off the phone with her. I had her read the post. She always did think it was funny that I got my rear and my gun busted, so yes it was worth it!
