unsure - tuners

i can't figure out if it's ok to have a tuner on the end of my standard rimfire silhouette? i have read the rules, and as long as i make weight, keep it under 30", then i'm ok?

yes, its legal in standard class to have a tuner,

At one time it was legal to have one on your hunter gun but that is not the case anymore.

Find ammo that shoots well in your hunter and then tune your heavy rifle to shoot the same stuff.

That's the $24k question

if you read the rules it seems to imply not, but I've seen them so they must be OK.

(e) Attachments which do not cause any portion of the rifle to exceed the weight or dimensions as listed
herein are permitted provided they do not extend past the end of the barrel. Sighting devices are not
considered "attachments".

If you go to page 5 of "Changing Zero" in the Rimfire Ammunition section you will see a picture of Steve B's rail gun with a Fudd tuner with a Bloop tube screwed in the end of it. Does the Bloop tube qualify as a barrel or does the bloop tube have to be directly attached to the barrel or in contact with the barrel? The reason I ask is I was looking through the Aug. 2008 Precision Shooting magazine and on page 60 there's a picture of Chet Amick looking through a scope and on the rifle is Hoehn/Harrel's tuner with a piece of PVC pipe stuck in the end like a bloop tube. Just curious if that would be legal?

now that one i dont know, but it looks like there is no bloop tube, the whole thing is the barrel, and the tuner was moved back away from the muzzle

I would have to look, I have way too many to keep track of. Chances are it's a Hoehn with bloop tube, unless it's my silhouette rifle, and legal or not, it has a Medesha bloop tube with weight (a giant piece of crap machining wise). I was going to replace with with a customized MEC tube and weight. But MEC parts are not cheap, and I want to be sure I can use it. At this poing, I'm probably gonna get it any way and deal with whatever problems arise later on.

wait, just looked. that's a factory Fudd tuner (very well made!). I love that tuner, and it works with my rifle quite well.

so on that particular rifle with the fudd tuner, does it have a bloop tube, and if it does, is the tuner on the barrel with the tube on the tuner, or the tube on the barrel with the tuner on the tube?

i confuse myself sometimes

The fudd tuner consists of two basic parts: one is a bloop - tube that clamps on the end of the barrel, and extends out past the end of the barrel. It is also threaded in the middle at it's major diameter. The second part is a steel weight that threads onto the tube and moves forward and back to influence the vibrations of the barrel.

The reason I'm curious about the type of setup your allowed is with a bloop tube attached directly to the barrel and tuner attached to bloop tube, you'll have to remove the bloop tube to clean fouling. With the tuner attached to barrel and bloop tube slid in the end of the tuner to contact the barrel, you simply slide the bloop tube out to clean fouling accumulation. Since the tuner setting is such a fine adjustment, I was wondering how often Mister Steve B has to clean his tuner or if fouling makes any difference at all in his tuner?

I clean the tuner everytime I clean the rifle, which is about 50 to 75 rounds. That about how many rounds it takes to set the barrel and shoot a BR card. The new Lilja's set pretty darn quick with the new Lapua ammo, something like 5 to 10 rounds.

yeah, the Fudd device is a tuner.

Also, you clean the tuner with it still attached to the barrel. you do not remove it. i have a tool made to fit large cleaning patches in the barrel for this.
