Air Rifle Cross Training

Post by BlauBear »

Shooting air gun very quickly taught me exactly what follow through is and how much it matters. Later, when applying follow through discipline in smallbore I immediately realized that I was pulling the trigger and rifle badly to the right. This fundamental form flaw did not show up in air rifle because of the extremely light trigger pull, but became very clear with the 2lb pull on a hunter trigger.

If you have not tried air rifle, you need to!

Don't forget the need for follow through because of the slower lock time as well. Your right, it will point out some flaws very quickly.

Good point - it takes a bit longer for a pellet to clear the barrel and if you don't hold on target, you will miss.

Hum Interesting I thought Lock time was the time it took for the trigger to release and the projectile to get moving, Barrel time is the time it takes for projectile to get down the barrel. For me some air Rifles have Lock times much quicker than powder burners. But the whole process in total is much longer for Air rifles.
BlauBear. You need to dry fire, then dry fire some more, and if you have time dry fire some more. Boring as hell but will pay off big time.

It wasn't apparent during dry fire exercises because I wasn't using a proper target and I'll need a 50-foot adapter for the scope.

So I have done dry fire exercises, but missed some of the benefit because I did them improperly. Set up a target you can focus on and practice, practice, practice.

I can only agree. When I start getting lazy with follow through etc I get out my spring gun and shoot with that. If you don't do everything right it can make you look fairly stupid. But they are fun as well.

Try practicing with a flint lock. That will teach you follow through.

History Channel just showed a segment on those and it really hit me how horrible those things were! Follow through nothing - those guys would close their eyes to protect them from sparks and smoke! It's amazing they could hit anything!

Bah.. they aren't all that bad if you tune them right. With a good lock, sharp flint, and a pan that's not overloaded, they're about as quick as a caplock on ignition. Just enough powder to light off the main charge is the key. More than that and igniting the main charge is unreliable and there's a whole lot more flash and stuff flying around than is necessary. They're fun to shoot at the pistol cartridge silhoutte targets, too. Pfft, BOOM, clang (if you're lucky). Then you have to wait for the smoke to clear to see if you hit the right one. :)
