Side mounted scopes?

Post by Chattcatdaddy »

Whats the official rule on using side mounted scopes? If the rifle was made to use a side mounted base/scope is it legal?

Silhouette Rifle
Rule 3.1 (b) Scopes may not be offset from the top center line of the receiver.
Silhouette Hunting Rifle
Rule 3.1.1 (b) Scopes may not be offset from the centerline of the bore. Exception: for rifles that eject the empty cartridge case straight up and that normally use a offset scope, the scope may be offset.

Hope that convolutes things enough,

Other than an older Winchester '94, what rifles eject the cartridge straight up, and would "normally" use a side mount scope?

I have several rifles made to use side mounted scopes although they may not eject perfectly up. Wonder how they decide if it is legal or not? Or is it a judgement call by the match director?

I own several rifles that are equipped with side mount scopes. Winchester 62, Savage 340, and Winchester 94's for example.
Admit it, it's never the guns fault. M Sickel

Cooey 60 is the rifle that has me trying to sort this out. Weaver makes a side mounted base that will get the scope just slightly off center. I could show up with it and start a little controversy  I believe Gator on this forum is the match director for small bore here in Chattanooga, guess I can run it by him.

Turns out my Cooey 60 ejects straight up(helps if I would pay attention more to my own rifle) So I guess a side/offset scope is legal for moi :D
