How high is your scope mounted?

I've been shooting a 1712 FWT with my scope mounted about 0.75" above the receiver (as measured from the top of the curved part of the receiver to the bottom of the scope tube). I'm currenly using a set of Brooks adapters (medium height I think) and some Burris Sig Zee rings.

I'm thinking that I'd like to move the scope up for all the normal reasons (move the rifle lower in my stance, keep my head more upright). I think that I can still get a good cheek weld with the 1712 Monte Carlo style stock if I go up with the scope.

To stay within hunter class rules, I believe the maximum allowable height is 1.5" from tube to receiver. (I don't have my rulebook with me right now).

I'm just curious right now about how high some of you other guys have your scopes mounted above the receivers. Any info. would be appreciated.

Mine is at 1-3/8" using BKL adapters with Burris Signature extra high rimfire rings. I needed 0.020" offset to build in some slope because I ran out of elevation adjustment.

The lower the better, but it varies from rifle to rifle. My Pharr stocked 1712 uses BKL's, which are kind of tall, while the Nesika 504 wears Leupold mediums.

I use BKL mediums right now. I have found that my natural point of aim seems to need the rifle about half way off my shoulder with the mediums. This make me think I might need a higher set of rings. Scores are good though.

I feel like I'm in a similar situation. The rifle has to be high on my shoulder for a good feeling position. I'd like to try some higher rings, or some longer arms and a shorter neck.

For what it's worth - my scope is 1 3/8" above the receiver with the base and rings made by Marvin Pearson. I've been far more consistent with this set up than before and if there is ever a problem getting enough elevation Marvin has been able to solve the problem with a base of a different angle. Works great and extremely repeatable when I've taken my scope off for whatever reason. Best of luck with your shooting.

I use BKL 257H's, mines a 1712 in a Pharr stock.

Tim, next match you need to shoulder mine and see if you see a difference between the regular BKL's and the highs.

I'm old school and like a firm cheekweld and like my scopes wherever they need to be for me to have a comfy yet firm and consistent cheekweld.

If you look at most offhand shooters in say NRA Service Rifle (where you cannot use an adjustable buttplate) the stocks are very high in the shoulder, usually about halfway out the top...........

Mine is 1-1/2 max allowable. I am 6 foot, short legs, long torso, with long neck. I can just lean my head over with cheek on stock and all is right there.
No more neck strain with head out of position. I now have a natural head sight position with no adjusting with improved accuracy. I can now shoot for long periods w/o neck hurting.

try this again:
I did to have high scope heights of (1.5") on both 54.18 and 1712 but recently went to lower mounts. This is how i determined proper heights needed. I mounted an old scope tube within a set of low rings with a set of straws mounted in a verticle string. I shoulderd rifle many times eyes closed and when opend eyes looking through straw tubes gave me proper alighnment. from here i measured back .5"(1/2) tube width gave outside of tube and measure to receiver to give ring height. This natural alignment gives proper head alignment, cheek pressure.
Works for me and saved lots of $$$$$$ experimenting with ring heights. After you decide on height needed, just get in touch with Marvin and he will supply you with proper rings and bases if needed. BKLs also work good, but in my opinion fit and finnish not as good as Marvins and not as much varity.

The eventual goal for your scope height is to keep your head as erect as possible within the confines of the rules and the height your cheek piece will allow. Our musculature, nervous system, and skeleton are all wired to keep our head erect. The more we move away from that the more our body has to adjust while we shoot. We can certainly learn to overcome.
