Breaking in my new 1712

Post by nanaimoman »

I've just received my new Anschutz 1712 rifle. Before I take it to the range I wanted to see what the members in the forum think about breaking in the rifle. I've been getting a lot of conflicting advice, so I'm hoping people here can point me in the correct direction before I start shooting it.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My way is to clean it, shoot 50 rounds, clean again shoot 100 rds, clean again, shoot 200 rds, clean again shoot 400, cleand again, shoot 25-30 rds to settle in, check group size at 100 yds or meters. save target as a referance, then shoot 100 rds and check group size again and there after every 100 rds and when it starts to go, clean it and you now know your cleaning intraval. Every gun and ammo combo is differant. Just my humble .02 cents

Guys I don't know how it is at your club, but at the two local clubs that I shoot at if you show up with a new gun it is kind of like a biker wedding
"Everyone wants a turn". Myself I do pretty much what Dawg does. I would then check how it shoots at 100 meter again after the gun has about 2000 round. On some of the factory barrels the gun will do better after several thousand rounds than it did new. As they say mileage may vary. Good luck Paul

That was a direct quote from Drake Davis. If you know him you know the rest of the story.

i'm not nearly as technical as most but i'd make sure there isn't a lollypop stuck in the barrel and then just shoot the damn thing.

This place is not only informative, it's pretty entertaining. We're on a roll here.
Here's another vote for "just shoot it." Finding out when to clean is a good idea, too.

yup...I agree...shoot the hell out of it. Enjoy....just watch the groups if they start to open up, then clean it.

There really isn't much of a breaking in period for a .22. I have seen them change preferences for ammo over time, but I would guess that has more to do with the ammo than the barrel.

Oh well, +2 for just shooting it.

I second that....

Pull through cleaning only for me (if at all possible...)

They say more barrels are ruined cleaning than anything???

Don't forget to talk to her real nice, and after giving her a good work out, wipe her down with a lightly oiled cloth. Best of luck.

It also helps during the break in period if the gun sleeps ini the bed with you at night.....

Sorry I missed that memo. We should be informative? Let me check my membership agreement about "informative".
