The Anti-Bling Rifle

We have lots of posts with flashy paint jobs, customs barrel, pretty scopes and mounts. I thought a anti-bling post would be interesting for the factory rifle shooters.

My Anti-Bling rifle a Anschutz FWT 1712: Factory Barrel, McMillian FWT stock, (with Walmart's best .99 paint) 6.5 X 20 Leupold scope ( no pretty paint job), Burris signature rings ( no pretty powder coating here) and a Pachmayer recoil pad.

Shoots 0.6 inch groups at 50 yards using Federal AutoMatch ammo from Wal-Mart.

No "bling" but more than enough "bang" to do the job I need it to do!

Dave, pretty is as pretty does, and that looks like a great rifle! Everything on that rifle is "The Good Stuff", so I'm not sure it really qualifies as anti-bling... Anschutz action, McMillan stock, and Leupold scope?! Is there a category for "Stealth Bling"?

Worker, your combination is very much like the rig I started with - 10/22, (Volquartsen hammer?), Hogue over mold stock, Green Mountain Bull Barre and Federal Automatch - and that puppy would shoot! The bull barrel got heavy, and keeping the action clean was no fun, but it was accurate.

Took the trigger to my gunsmith and had him "smooth it out" a bit for me. When it's kept clean it trips at 3 to 3.5 lbs. My gunsmith flat-out refused to take it any lower than that. He said if I did, it would start to risk doubling-off.

I don't mind a heavy barrel. In some ways I prefer it. It feels weird when I try to shoot a light gun. It tends to be less stable. It's like I've got a handfull of air.

Cleaning can be a chore but it's more like a ritual to me. I started cleaning my Dad's guns when I was 10 years old. It's always been a kind of meditation to me, after a long day's shooting. Besides, it's nothing compared to cleaning a flintlock! ;)

Dave, I think a couple of coats of the Skittles green epoxy would do wonders for that plain 'ol Mc Millan stock. It will most certainly be an improvement over that .99 cent Walmart job you did

Having seen Dave's gun I'm pretty sure the granite effect is from laying the stock on his lawn when he painted it.

Jeff, thanks for the tip I will try that. How about letting my kids play with it right after I paint it . I might get an interesting pattern from that too.

Nice looking Varmint, Shorty! Dang but this group has good taste in rifles! Folks, any rifle that would grab my eye in a rack just cannot be anti-bling! Can it? Or maybe you just can't hide the good stuff?
