I got a set from Varn as well. Got a good laugh at the postal lady trying to get that little box of CAST IRON targets out of her truck.

They should be around a long time, especially when I miss at least as many as I hit.

But how, exactly, does Varn animate these things? I mean, they're cast iron, and they only move when seen through a scope and it's hard to figure how he does it...

At our club, Ralph made swingers out of the cast iron animals. In 2 weeks I shot the legs off the chicken and the front quarter off the ram. Go with the steel.

I just read on this site where the metal silhouette animals are better than the cast, well, that may be "IF" the cast animals are not of the right material or there was problems with the casting process. I will not say that I have not had any break, but in the last 5 years I could put all the broken animals in a 12"x6"x6" carton, so it is very minimal. I have a lifetime warrantee on my animals so it you break one while using Standard Velocity [ NRA rule in competition ] I will replace it free.
I have seen many plasma cut animals with welded bases [ not NRA approved ] bend and even some break and this will not happen with the cast animals. My animals have been used at the Nationals in Raton N.M. for the last few times and am the only approved supplier for them. They have been used at many regional and monthly matches also. If you are in need of Super Good Quality Silhouette targets with an awesome warrantee I suggest you check mine before you buy anywhaer.

Keep in mind, these were cast iron swingers, and that bird was hit about 200 times before those drumsticks came off. In matches, this would not be the case

Ray,

The cast iron swingers which T Bone is referring to are yours. I ordered them from you for the Hollywood Rifle and Pistol club a few months ago. T Bone and myself put 99% of the shots on these targets at the club. I only shoot Wolf Match Target, not sure what T Bone is using but I believe it's standard velocity. I'll check his ammo next time I'm at the club or he can just comment here on it.

So far, T Bone has broken a chicken and ram swinger, both at the legs. We have had no problems with the cast iron targets set on the railings but they aren't holding up well on the swingers. I replaced the chicken with one our spare cast iron chickens (drilled a 1/4" hole and mounted it on the swinger bracket). I'm going there tomorrow to shoot and will take a look at the broken ram and will probably drill a 1/4" hole in a spare ram and make a replacement swinger target out of it.

The reason it's happening to the swinger targets and not the regular ones is that the swingers are being shot almost everyday and the regular targets only come out once a month. We only let shooters who are approved by the club access to the swingers so it's not like someone is shooting them when we're not there, but they are definitely taking a serious pounding. I practice about once a week and shoot about 200 rounds a week on the 4 swingers while T Bone is shooting at least 1000 rounds a week on the 4 swingers and his scores are showing it. He's shooting in the low 30s after only a few months.

I do like your targets better than those made of steel plate so we're not giving up on them but the problem with cast iron is that I can't weld it if it breaks. We have some steel plate targets too and they break all the time but someone with a welder and grinder can fix them pretty quick. I've never had much success trying to weld cast iron.

I will be sending the chicken and ram back to you so you can inspect them. My opinion is that the heavy base, while good for setting on a rail, is a bad thing for a swinger. There's too much weight below the legs and this eventually causes a stress fracture. Most steel swingers I've seen don't have bases attached to the legs.

I'm thinking about grinding the bases down on the swinger targets to reduce weight and stress on the legs. What's your opinion on this?

Ray's targets are obviously holding up very well elsewhere so this may be a problem with how we are using them at HRPC. Until we figure out what is happening, let's not jump to any conclusions. One thing we are going to do starting immediately is to check the ammo of everyone who wants to take a shot at the targets and make sure they are using std velocity ammo. It may be that someone hits the target with high velocity ammo one time and starts a stress fracture which doesn't cause the target to break until further down the road when T Bone is practicing.
