meters or yards?

I'm curious, how many ranges are set up at yards instead of meters? I think all the clubs I've shot at have been meters. Should you use the normal size targets for a "yard" match? The only mention I've been able to find, for adjusting for shooting at yards instead of meters, has to do with national records. What say ye?

From what I've seen, no "official" silhouette ranges I've been to have been set up in yards. That is, no place where you can shoot in a sanctioned match that will "count." That said, if you find a place to shoot silhouette that has the targets set up at distances measured in yards, go ahead and shoot there for the fun and practice. Just know that you will have to adjust your sight settings if you travel to a santioned match.

If memory serves me correctly, the Kentucky State Championship shot in Bowling Green shot under the direction of Doug and Sarah Greer is shot at yards instead of meters, with targets scaled proportionately. Been two years since I shot Kentucky, so my memory may not be correct. Someone with more current knowledge feel free to jump in and correct me. Also at Gateway Rifle and Pistol Club in Jacksonville Fla home of Chuck Deeson's Sunshine Classic, the pigs are likewise closer and scaled proportionately.

Port Malabar Rifle and Pistol (Florida)has been scaled down to yards, only to share the range with other groups. Rather difficult getting the pigs, not too many suppliers have them available.

I have shot at many clubs in the west and I don't think I have ever shot at one in yards.

Thanks for the input. I guess I should give some background info. The club I belong to has held "unofficial" smallbore rifle shoots for a couple of years. This year we took a step up and ran the shoots as a NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program. We shot (at)

1/5 scale targets at 40,60,77 and 100 yards.
I guess my real question is, can you run a "approved" match with those targets and distances? The way I read the rules it seems that we could. Section 7 on "Courses Of Fire" lists size of targets and distances in meters or yards. There is no mention of adjusting the size of targets for using the shorter yards distance.
Under Section 6 "Range Standards" It talks about "splitting the difference" on turkeys at 76 meters/yards and using reduced size pigs at 50 meters/yards on multi use ranges.
The "Alternate Range Distances" subsection seems to be directed at shooting matches at significantly reduced distances i.e. smallbore at 40 meters/yards for all targets.
The only section that seems to address the difference between meters and yards is "National Records" Sec. 17.5 it mentions proportional targets for "yard" distances.
My concern is that if sometime in the future we take the next step and try to run "real" matches, we find out our targets are too big for the distances we have to work with. I'm also operating under the assumption that 9/50 ? scale targets will be much harder to find and more expensive to buy than 1/5 scale.

Yep, you're pole vaulting over mouse droppings again. Yes there are ranges set up for smallbore silhouette using the yard distances. Here in the east there are quite a few ranges where the maximum distance is 100 yards with backstops positioned accordingly. When we decided to run silhouette we just didn't have the distance to go to 100 meters. Some ranges set the closer animals in meters but set the rams at yards. Others simply went with everything at yards. At Delran we used the general purpose rifle range and set it up in yards but Marshall Johnson was able to eventually construct a separate dedicated range just for silhouette so now everything for smallbore is in meters. Square circle in Gibbsboro, NJ still uses the yard settings because they are using the general purpose rifle range which is limited to 100 yards. I always ask whether the targets are in meters or yards because the sight settings may be different for some animals. We always used the same size animals and my scores seem to be equally poor at either distance.
I wouldn't spend a lot of time ruminating over this one!

If I remember correctly, You have to get approval from Conners to shoot in yards. At one time you could do this if your range was already set up to shoot pistol silhouette, but you need to reduce the targets. We shoot pigs at 50 meters in Jax, FL., but reduced them by 18%, Had someone make the targets for us with a programable cutter. Hope this helps out.

We shoot yards on Staten Island for NRA approved matches. Rule 7.1 and 7.2 in the NRA rule book states meters or (yards).

BTW I shoot better scores at Delran NJ (meters) than I do at either Square circle or our home range, which are both yards
