I was wondering what case you fellow shooters use when traveling the airways? I dont care about the cost of the case as long as it handles the abuse of the gorillas in baggage handling.

That same SKB case that I've been bringing my smallbore rifle down to Tacoma in is the one that I use for transporting guns on airplanes. I'll show it to you the next time I come down. I wouldn't mind a little bigger case if I were taking multiple rifles, though.

This is my choice. Been coast to coast and in between and the only damage any of the monkeys at the airlines have been able to do is knock the wheels off. Ordered new ones that snapped right back in place.

One of our buddies in PA had a fork lift driven through their case. I don't think anything could withstand that. You can only do the best you can but they'll find a way to get you.

I have used various cases but the brand that held up the best and is among the lightest is made by Kalispel in Washington (eastern side). Creedmore carries them as well as they will sell direct. The cases are usually slightly shorter and fit in the smaller rental cars easier.

The problem with gun cases is that they look like gun cases and there are a lot of loons out there who will drive a forklift over it because it contains a gun. I saw this case suggested on another forum and it seems like a good choice for strength, available storage, and stealth.

I have had excellent luck with Americase's. They are heavy to transport, but can be had with wheels. Just about indistructable. The Safari 2 rifle model is about perfect.

Call me "pedestrian" or "un-couth" or any other pejorative....

What the heck is wrong with a Pelican case? They are virtually indestructible and cost a fraction of what most of the linked items in this thread cost......200 bucks (+/-) with the foam inserts. They float, they're puncture resistant, they have wheels.....

Some of the most travelled and best trained marksmen in the entire Department of Defense use these cases for extensive overseas work.

They ain't pretty but they are sure hard to beat!!

Shakes,I use a 3 gun case from Americase, It lets you put 3 rifles standing up ansd has a partition between them. Only thing is you have to take the bolts out of the gun, but it has storage area to keep them in. I got mine from Bobby Pitchford and runs around $400.00. It has wheels and is compact enough that you can stand it on its end and will not fall over. I really like the way it is built. Hope this helps. Bobby told me the guys use them to go to Africa and have never had a gun damaged.

Nothing wrong with a Pelican case, they can be had for a little under $200 shipped. But, Will they hold hold both a Std and a Hunter rifle? The ones (1700 series) I have seen would only hold one rifle, and 2 Pelican's aint cheap either. I do like the new Desert camo model!

Kallispell cases are under $200, for a double scoped case. The Pelican cases are nice...but in the military they are not concerned about weight limits as most commercial airlines charge by the pound for anything over 50 pounds, and not a just a few cents per pound. I think Marvin ended up paying over $75 for having a case (not rifle, just ammo/scope/vests) that was less than 15# overweight two years ago. This is the primary reason I use the Kallispel case as I can get the double scoped rifles in the aluminmum case and still be under 42#, as well as they are at least 2 inches shorter than other cases and fit in even compact rental cars, another cost saving feature when flying. I have had a Kalispell case destroyed by the airlines but both rifles were shot at the match and functioned well, some minor cosmetic damage. I have had other brand cases destroyed as well with some damage to the rifle but repairable.
As a side note the area of the country that damage occured was all in the NorthEast, Pittsburg, Rochester.

Airline travel tip #1...maximize the insurance on the gun case(s), tends to make them be more careful. BTW don't let the airline ticket agent insist that they do not sell additional insurance, they do, Southwest cost $12.50 for maxiimum.

#2 Put ammo in hard locking suitcase, they will not insure tool boxes. Pack whole bricks in bubble wrap, most TSA do not recognize that it is more than two boxes, and those that do are usually pro-firearm.

I can't stand it any longer.I was rereading old issues of Precision Shooting last year and ran across an article about the cases the military uses.The fella in the article put a dozen uncooked eggs and 2 wine glasses in a rifle case and threw it of the roof of his business. No broke eggs or glass! Thru a google search I found that the manufacturer was only 15 miles from my home. I called and they said they would be glad to show me their company and products. The owner and designer of the cases is a retired sub captain (USNRet.) and he gave me the tour. He showed me a case that was in one of the flash videos he had on his website at the time. It was a camera case that they had removed the o-ring gasket and air release valve. They then drove a 56,000 lbs.(28 ton) troop carrier over the case 3 times. The case was mangled from the third trip, but they pulled the camera out of the case and took his promotional pictures for his business.They have a nifty lock that the airlines can use their key but has an indicator to show they have been in it. The name of the company is New Innovative Products,Inc. and their web site is "starlightcases.com"(sorry I don't know how to give you a direct link to their sight ). I bought 2 double rifle cases from him and I carried my hunter and smallbore rifles with me and they wanted to know if I wanted them to cutout the foam to fit (the knife to cut the foam comes with the case). Please go on-line and check them out and the various tests that folks have put their cases thru. Oh yeah the airlines use his cases for tools and sensitive equipment. Hope this helps. chickenchoker
