hi fellas, i am new to your site and your aggravating sport , which i have discovered is the purist form of shooting. shot swingers today with my good friend Ralph and need some help. what is the best way to raise my scope off my 54.18 and the best and quickest place to send a 6x20 leupold for a 5/16 dot? thanks kevin

Depending on the scope rings you currently have, you can just buy a set of taller rings. At the cheaper end, BKL's are popular and available in several heights. BKL also makes riser blocks, and can make a riser with "slope" built in if you desire and can wait a while. Burris Signature Zee's can be used as well, with or without riser blocks, and feature removable "offset" inserts to create the desired slope. There are a couple of technical articles on the home page of Steelchickens about rings and risers.

As far as adding a dot to your Leupold, I'll let someone else suggest.

Leupold does a really nice target dot that will preserve your warranty, too. They've done two for me and turnaround was about three weeks, though this is close to their busy season since a lot shooters and hunters routinely send their scopes in for service about now. Call or email 'em - they're good folks.

I had a bad experience with Leupold last month. I called wanting to know the prices for having reticles replaced on two of my scopes. I wanted the larger of the two Leupold dot reticles they make installed on a 6.5X20 variable and also a 24X BR with the lock ring.

The person that answered the phone quoted me two different prices for the reticle change the variable being more expensive than the other. So since I did not mind shooting a scope with a duplex reticle I only sent the 24X power scope because it had a fine cross hair reticle that I could not see when shooting silhouettes.

To make the story short I received a letter from them telling me I owed them $15 which brought the price of the reticle change to about $80 without counting the money I paid to ship the scope to them. About two weeks later I got the scope back from them and it had a 1/8 minute target dot and very fine crosshairs instead of the larger of the two Leupold dot reticle I had requested by the way the large Leupold dot is one that starts a bit heavy and tapers towards the middle and the dot is about

Wow - that is an unfortunate change! It seems like they charged $65 for the service a year ago!

A year or so ago Leupold started a $15. charge for service work on scopes, I would guess that the charge was instituted to offset their return shipping costs. Please note that I said service work - not repair, Apparently this does not apply to repairs because I have sent two scopes in for repair since the policy was institued and was not charged for either of them. I believe that somewhere on their website they mention the $15. charge, although it would be nice if they noticed it more widely.

I'm more than willing to cover reasonable charges for shipping and service on scopes sent in for a post-season check up. In fact I want to pay enough for these services that Leupold can continue to offer them, but the operative words here are "reasonable" and "check up", so charges for reticle changes should be inclusive and warranty repair is another issue completely.

thanks do you mean if i send the scope to someone else it will void leupold's warranty? and also i want the max 2'' scope clearance. are the 20 mm risers from CC any good ? im looking for a clean look. how do you guys get the 2'' on an anschutz? kevin

Yes. They may or may not enforce it, but sending it elsewhere voids the Leupold warranty. Leupold and Premier had a falling out last year and folks were reminded that warranty repair on scopes others had worked on was at Leupold's discretion.

My latest experience with Leupold was not very good.

I returned a Premier Reticle EFR with 1/2" dot scope for repair because a large o-ring in the focusing ring had "blown-out" and needed to be inserted. I got the scope back within 2 weeks which is good. For free, which is good. the o-ring was repaired - good. The focus ring now has this loose-tight feel when turning and 100yds focuses more like 40yds - bad.

I have a mindset to send it right back. But I'd have to eat the cost of shipping. This would be the 3rd time I've sent this EFR to Leupold for focusing related problems.

At least one of my Leupold's has the same binding, but the focus is fine so I just try to ignore it.

I just dicovered Bruno's in Phoenix and ordered a fixed 25X with a 3/8 dot for $549. I'll be having steel turkeys for thanksgiving. Happy holidays, boys.
