The new addition to my silhouette stable. My 1st HP rifle :)

Post by Dee »

Just got it back from Evelio on Monday :ymparty: and was able to break in the barrel here at the house and get a rough offhand zero at 50 yards. Took it with me to the smallbore match today to zero it and give it a go at 100y for a group off the bench. Then I used the few remaining loaner rounds I had to shoot a few of the scaled 300 yard swingers. So far so good I am very happy with my results.

Wasn't the best day for shooting bench groups with a nice shifty wind and no wind flags since someone picked them up after the SB match  Besides my bench rest amounted to a pile of bags in front with nothing in the back but my shoulder and elbows on the bench. All while sitting on a small stool with what seemed to have 4 different length legs, so not the stablest of platforms i'll admit. The group was decent enough all things considered so I only shot the one. I wanted to ring the steel with the rest of my ammo! Went 6/10 on the swingers and called it a day after smacking the last round home. Can't wait to try some different loads in better conditions with a lead sled setup to really test it out. All I know is at 300y it was dead nuts 8)

Build notes.... Remington 700 ADL with a Kreiger stainless barrel chambered in 6.5x47 Lapua with a replaced J-lock POS firing pin/spring to a speed lock pin and spring. All dressed in a black Pharr RT/S stock and topped with a 8-32 Bushnell 4200.

Dee, Is your Kreiger a #4 or #5 taper? Does it make weight for hunter class with the scope you have? Al

It has the #4 contour barrel. According to Kreiger it is 1/4 pound lighter than the #5. I have yet to put it on the scale so going to cross my fingers. I figure the extra weight of the scope will be offset by the lighter barrel weight. I know a few with #5 barrels and 30x Leupolds coming in a couple ounces under so I am hoping for the best or may have to change something up.

Trent - I have 500 Lapuas waiting to go but hush on the 142 sierras don't tell anyone. I'll get some Lapuas for the rams I swear lol. And yes I am ready to shoot minus all the ammo Hehe. Benton will be the inaugural match so less than 2 months to go!

Dee, I have been using Kreigers since the early 90's, and have never had a bad one. I currently have two Nesika Bays with #5's in 260 Rem, and the both come in just below the limit with 25X Leupolds. Your new rig looks real nice, hope it works out for you. Al

For now I am going to try the stock trigger. It actually doesn't feel all that bad to me. I imagine in the future I will upgrade it to a Shilen or if I really want to get a 2 stage maybe a Jackson trigger.

Looks Great! My 6.5 creedmoor is almost done. Thats what my smith is telling me. I am using A rifle basix trigger and they are nice for the money.
Good Luck and Good Shooting.

Well I just weighed my rifle with the 8-32x Bushnell on it and it is just under 3 ounce over weight @#%$^@&$^@

So now I guess I am going to have to break down and buy a Weaver 36x and get a dot installed to make weight. I was really hoping to stick with my 4200's I love them so much but it just isn't meant to be it would appear.

I also need to tweak the trigger a tiny bit to get the weight up a couple of ounces as well. To heavy on one weight and to light on another.

Good luck man. I just finally got my new standard rifle down to weight this weekend. Went from a 26" down to 23.5", removed the box mag and follower, removed scope caps and bored two 1" holes about 6" deep in the buttstock. Finally got it down to 10lbs 1oz (maybe 1.5oz). I didn't think I was going to make it. :-ss

Dee, If you still have the stock firing pin assembly you could change it out with an aluminum bolt shroud speedlock type assembly. I believe Midway sells a version of these. I use ones from Gretan. Also it was hard to see what rings and bases you have, but single screw Kelbley rings with Davidson bases are as light as you can get. Al Foust

I am pretty sure that the new firing pin/spring I sent to Evelio for replacing the J Lock and the shroud were the Speedlock variety and the Alum. Shroud. So I wish I still had that as an option but I appreciate the thought. I just don't see any other way around it but to get a lighter fixed scope. The rings I have now are X-High Talley Alum. Just not enough that I can take away to cut the weight minus shortening the barrel and I don't want to do that.

I will have to check the firing pin I bought. Now that I think about it that thing felt rather heavy for Alum. Not sure if there is enough weight in that for 3 ounces either though.

Planning to shoot this rifle in Ark. next month so time is short. Might look into a loaner scope for the match.

Dee, I did a quick check in Midway's catalog of scope weights.

Bushnell 8-32 22 oz.
Weaver T 16.7 oz.
Leupold FX-3 14.6 oz.

You are on the right track changing scopes. Now you just have to decide which one. I have some of both. I use T-24 Weavers on my SB rifles and Leupold FX3 25's and older 24 powers on my HP rifles. I would lean towards the newer Leupolds for HP because they have clearer glass. Big plus when shooting 500 M. Al Foust

I'd suggest a Sightron SII Big Sky 6-24x44 Silhouette scope. It's 17.6 ounces and has wonderful glass as well as variable power. If you consider this, make sure to get the "Big Sky" model, as the glass in the non-Big Sky models isn't as good. This is the specific model I'm talking about.

When funds allow, I intend to pick one up for my highpower rifle. I hear that Chicken George has the best prices on these right now, so I would check with him first before purchasing this (or any other) scope somewhere else.

You already have an aluminum firing pin and sleeve, the only practical way to reduce 3 ounces, is by changing scopes.
Sorry buddy, but that 25" long barrel is fairly heavy.
