Iron Sight Shooters?

Post by .22-5-40 »

Hello, everyone. This is my first post. Back around 1980, I was heavy into IHMSA shooting. Club was going to start high-power silhouette. Only rifles I had at the time able to compete were an 1896 Krag carbine & low number 1903 Sprng. Home range was 200yds., so I practiced with both rifles..found the Krag to be a bit more accurate..little flip-up peep on rear worked well on paper.
We were allowed sight-in time before match...You can imagine my dismay when I couldn't see targets thru that little peep! Had to shoot match with open "U" rear. I think I missed every chicken..got 4 pigs, I was left & right on turkeys..even off the bench! Did manage to down 4 rams..hit one, but didn't budge. Man that barrel was hot! oil in stock was smoking..didn't help sight picture any! At the time I decided that it was just a little too hard to be fun. I never did try again..Perhaps I should give it another whirl?

.22-5-40,
Welcome to the forum. I would say absolutely!
There is a group of military rifle afficianados that compete in Military Rifle Silhouette Matches at the Ridgway Rifle Club.
Wether or not this competition will be recognized by the NRA remains to be seen. Most popular rifles are the semi autos but I see that someone did shoot a bolt gun in the June championship match.

There was a person from PA shooting a M1A at this years HP Nationals and shot them using open sights. He won several awards over the 3 days.
