Ammo on the Flight

we are planning the trip to the Nationals
anyone know how many rounds we can carry on the plane?

I believe 11 pounds per person, but you may want to check with the airline you are flying with.

We work on 5kg in original or secure packaging,
I then lock it in a surplus metal ammo box.
Seems to keep everyone happy,

but each airline and check-in desk seem to have their own ideas about rules and regulations !!!

They're all out to sting us for any extra baggage weight, as well, so be warned.
Rifle/s and ammo take up a large proportion of an allowance.

"Firearms
Federal regulations require that firearms in checked baggage or in their own shipping cases be unloaded and declared. Firearms are not allowed in carry-on bags. Firearms in checked baggage must be packed in a locked hard-sided bag or gun case. A maximum of 11 lbs. of small arms ammunition is allowed in checked luggage in the original manufacturer's box or securely packed in a fiber, wood or metal box to prevent movement of cartridges.

Yes the TSA regulations are 11 pounds, in original manufacturing boxes, then packed in hard, locked case seperate from the rifles, in most airports. Again this is open to the interpretation of the TSA person readign the rules at the time. Example, El Paso agents tend to want the ammo in with the rifle case.

Best option is to UPS it to someone there. Takes care of the problems of how each airline agent and the tsa agents feel when you check in. My experience is they all have a different idea of what the rules are.
