More expensive to feed, but worth it.

tc icon

Post by silhouette13 »

hello crew,

any one have any experiance(hunting or silo) with the tc icon? i am thinking of buying a dual purpose rig silo, when i can-no ranges in new england, but mostly as a deer rig. i am NOT looking for reasons why i should get a 700 rem in 260. or a tikka t3 in 6.5x47 etc......just info on the icon. i did a search on the forum and didnt even see mention. they look nice enough and i have seen a few in print and tv hunting shows.

if you must say get a remington, have at it is is after all America .cz452v

No one I know has one nor has anything been written in these pages about them. I handled two of the walnut stocked models recently at a Gander Mountain store here. They seem to be well made and of good quality. One glaring defect I noticed was that the fore ends on both guns warped badly pressing the barrels hard on one side. The stainless synthetic model might be a better choice for a more humid climate. Hunting / silhouette cartridge choices are limited to .308 Win.....30TC....and the 6.5 Creedmore in both models. Specs say they have 5R match grade barrels. I think either model or caliber would make a nice dual purpose rifle.

I have several 700's, nice rifles for sure. But I also shoot silhouette with a Ruger 77, Rem 788 and Win 70's. Just like buying a car, pick the one you like and drive it.

Silly13 if the Icon has your attention, by all means go to nearist store and check it out. The few I have seen were all smooth actions, great feel to me, As Mc Alice said the fit and finish is not always perfict, but will most likely out shoot the hunters..

Good luck in your search

thanks Gents,

as mentioned, not a whole lot of oppertunity in my area for HP, i am heavily leaning towards a 6.5 creedmoore. Bob, could you give opinions about the pro/cons of the ruger 77?

i am a big fan of rugers, and since it is mostly going to be a deer rig maybe even another #1 may be an option, not a great trigger for silo, but that can be overcome.

sadly there are no ranges around here that i can even get sight settings on.

thanks again, be sure to vote

Pros and cons of the Ruger 77? NO cons, it is a great rifle. Very well made, classic lines, an American made no nonsense bolt action hunting rifle. I bought mine new in 1990 from a dealer who could not sell it . He had it for four years. I got it for cost. Trouble was it was a 22 inch 7X57 with out "magnum" as part of its name. Only 7 mags were selling in his shop.

It was a tack driver right out of the box with just some tuning to the adjustable trigger. The only load it ever fired for its entire 4700 round barrel life was 41grs. of RL-15 pushing a 140 Sierra pro hunter flat base hunting bullet, and a 160 GK for rams. My personal best scores were with that gun and loads. It was a sad day when the barrel finally quit shooting good.

But it still lives... as a 7-08. Two years ago I fitted it with a new 24 inch Remington 7-08 factory takeoff barrel. It cost me $35.00 and four hours of machining time. It wears a Leupold 12X with knobs and shoots even better than when new. The current load is a 150 Sierra MK with 38.0 grs. of Varget. I use it on all targets, it does drop our rams reliably. I mostly just fire it as a practice gun but would not hesitate to use it at ANY match anywhere. I will never part with this fine rifle.

Check out an Icon and a Ruger 77. You cant go wrong with either for a dual purpose rifle.. Also, the 77 is available in 6.5 Creedmoor and 7-08, too. 8)
