What scope/power for HP

More expensive to feed, but worth it.

What scope/power for HP

Post by jbolt »

I might be coming into a Rem SPS 700 7mm-08 to use for HP. I plan to start shooting it as-is in hunter class for now. In smallbore I use a SII 6-24x42 Sightron at 24x. My only complaint about the Sightron is the1/8' clicks. What power do most shoot in HP? How much elevation change is there between animals?

I use either a Leupold 6.5-20X EFR or a straight 24X with 1/4 min clicks. I go 8.5 MOA from C-to Rams at 500 mtr with .260 Rem

I uses the Leupold 6.5x20, settings will vari by your load and rifle. Zero at the chickens and then go from there.

A variable is the preferd way to go. mag from 6-24 is max. any more power and mirage from heat of barrel or ground becomes a problem. I use a br24 and like high mag scopes but would not go any higher on my high power scope because of the mirage issues.

If I could find a T-24 w/ 1/4 clicks I'd put it on my SB rifle and move the Sightron to the HP rifle. Haven't had any luck finding one in the past.

Just about any scope with target knobs will work. 1/8 min clicks will take you past one revolution with most loads. My settings are chick 0, pig 2, turk 5, and ram 7. at lower elevations I use 8 for rams. I like lots of power and shoot SB and HP at about 30x to 35x.

Back in the 70's and 80's we started out with the 10 and 12 powers. That has increased over the years as more powerfull scopes came available. Probably the norm now is 24. Some still shoot 12 or 16 up to 36 to 40. I use a variable 18 x 40 set at 32 for the HP game and fixed 36 for smallbore.
For your 708 you will need 11 to 13 , --- minutes--- of elevation from your chicken zero to reach the rams. Remember that most scopes work "track" best in the center of the elevation and windage range.

Is that inches or minutes? I go 8 minutes up from chickens to rams with my rifle. That would be about 44 inches.
