What do the targets weigh ?
I brought a digital scale to the range yesterday to weigh the animals. I never really knew the weight of the CPT. We all know the ram is about 55 lbs. but what about the others? I selected one each of the A400 armor plate animals in near perfect condition.
Chicken...1/2 inch thick...11.2 lbs.
Pig.....1/2 inch thick....31.0 lbs.
Turkey...3/8 inch thick...22.5 lbs.
Ram....3/8 inch thick....53.25 lbs.
So, now you know why you have a sore back at the at the end of the day.

Your welcome Jerry. You might want to pass this info on to your chiropractor also. You can get a Doctors written excuse from picking up the pigs and rams.
It kind of gives you a new appreciation for the target setters at a big State or National match. Some of those young kids really work their butts off.

Re: What do the targets weigh ?
Last year at Raton we had a shortage of target setters. Seems that word has gotton around to the youth in the surrounding counties that setting targets in the hot sun all day ain't no picnic at any price. They will have difficulty filling this need next year.
Last year little Mallory (Kittys grand daughter) got drafted into the chicken setter patrol. Of course, she could see the financial benefit of $50.per day to help out.

McAlice... it's not fair trying to wear the kids down by paying them to set the animals... the truth is they will still beat usBob Mc Alice wrote:........Last year little Mallory (Kittys grand daughter) got drafted into the chicken setter patrol. The Rams are why I decided to go with a 7mm-08. All of the animals are hard enough to hit to have to go through the grief of seeing one still standing after you hit it.

Right on AZ.
Most 7-08 shooters know to load it down for the CPT, then kick in the extra horsepower with 168 - 175 gr. bullets for rams. Big game needs to be hit with big bullets.

Spoken by the 7mm guru...But all kiding aside the 7 mm does hit harder and I also think the barrel life is a lot better and the availability of cheap practice bullets is greater than the 6.5 mm....would you agree Bob

Re: What do the targets weigh ?
Guru? Hardly...but thanks for the compliment Malinois. True, I have fired many thousands of 7-08 rounds over the years and feel I know it quite well. 17,887 to be exact. Yes, I do keep records, I am anal like that. Just this year alone I have shot over 1600 rds. practicing at CRC. And only 200 or so were Match Kings. I try and reserve those for matches or practice just before a match. I have got eight 7-08's , four dedicated Douglas barreled match guns and the rest are recent ones I put together for plinking, practice, hunting and fun. One of the match guns is a favorite I use at the Dynamite Shoot .
I get a lot of my hunting bullets from guys selling off boxes cheap at the matches or gun shows. Nationals is a great place to find folks selling unwanted hunting bullets cheap.I got to get to the tables fast because I know Lone Ringer is doing the same thing! Because of the component drought it was slim pickings last year. One time 20 years ago a now defunct chain store here (Dave Cooks) was being bulldozed for development. They were slashing all of the inventory before closing. No kidding...it took several trips to my car to haul out about 100 boxes of 100ct. 7mm Sierra, Hornady, Speer and Nosler hunting bullets. From 100 gr. hollow points to 175 gr. round nose and everything in between. I spent less than $200. I had them in a pile on the living room floor. When Sara got home she about had a stroke as she knows what bullets cost. I showed her the receipt, got a pat on the back and all was well.
I hoped I would live long enough to fire them all. Well, I did. Quality hunting bullets are fantastic for practice or matches. I have no problem making them shoot well.
I have fired a lot of matches on nine different ranges on this side of the country.I feel I have gotton a good representation of ram weights, how they sit on the different stands and the prevailing conditions. I don't need more than two hands and maybe a couple of toes to count the number of rams I have lost with the 7-08. It is a ram killer just like the .308, and I have one of those set up for silhouette, too.
The 6.5, 7mm and .30 cal. silhouette cartridges all have their pros and cons. Bullet weight, barrel life, recoil to name a few. You really cant go wrong with any of them. Shoot what you got and shoot it a lot. And have fun doing it.
In closing, the 7-08 works very well for me.

Just for grins and giggles, I googgled up 7mm Guru, and shure enough it had a picture of McAlice there with the explanation that stated: Stubborn old fart who won't give up the ghost and go to a 6.5.
