Grandma's gun

Post by pistolero45 »

This past Thanksgiving my dad gave daughter, Meghan, her grandmother's deer rifle. It is a Remington model 700 BDL in .243 caliber which was purchased new in 1963. My mom loved to hunt and was an excellent shot. When she came down with cancer 11 years ago, grandma let it be known Meghan was to receive her rifle.

The torch has now been passed. We checked the gun at the rifle range last weekend, and this weekend Meghan filled her doe tag with grandma's rifle.

Meghan was sitting on the ground against a tree trunk overlooking a wooded draw. The deer came in behind her and she could hear them walking and see their shadows. A spike buck stepped around her tree at TWO yards! Meghan played it cool and did not move. He did not know what she was and did not spook too badly. His doe was not aware of the pending danger, and Meg stopped her at 20 yards with a soft, "pssst"! One shot through the heart and lungs was all it took.

Meghan is now talking about using her "new" rifle in high power Silhouette.

The girls are being pretty hard on the deer this fall - especially girls with .243's! Nice work!
