If you were looking to add a new SB rifle and money wasn’t the greatest of concern what would you buy?

I’m currently debating between:

1: buy an anschutz 1712/1710 knowing I will also buy an aftermarket stock

2: go full custom Vudoo or 2500x

Any thoughts are appreciated.

If you go custom action and are OK with the single shot get the Trident rather than the 2500X. Bolt lift won't hit your rail or scope rings as easily.

A 1761 action is worth considering. Reminds me of a refined CZ457 including easy pull and swap barrels. The single shot version used on 3P rifles lacks the magazine placed perfectly in the way featured on the sporters.

FWIW - I just bought a brand new 1712.

It is having serious problems feeding from the factory supplied magazine. It is majorly frustrating for a brand new $2200+ rifle to not feed properly from its own factory magazine.


1761 is supposed to be an improvement on the magazine design, but the 1761 model is ugly, and I'm not convinced that the magazine placement on 1761 lends itself to a good silhouette hold.

That is unfortunate and not acceptable. It may be just the magazine or it could be something with the rifle itself.

If I were you I would contact Anschutz North America to initiate a repair/ servicing if you can’t figure out the problem on your own.

I understand and agree. The rifle is boxed and ready to return from my local dealer to Anschutz North America. This is my recent experience. I previously owned a different 1712 that exhibited no issues other than the well-known weak ejection which would sometimes result in empty cases falling back into the loading / ejection port.

The 1761 looks interesting to me. I haven't held one, and wonder what the hold would be like with the magazine extending in front of the trigger guard as it does. AFAIK, it is still not legal to support one's hand on the bottom of a magazine in silhouette matches. That looks like it might be a problem for the 1761 design.

Depending on your hold the magazine very well may be exactly in the way on the repeater. I own a 1761 single shot 3 position target rifle, no magazine in the way. I have not done any research for parts but the difference between the single shot and repeater seems to be plastic filler in what would be the magazine cut on the receiver. Extraction and lockup are robust. Lock-time very fast. There is very little scope base real estate on the action. I used extended rings to mount a scope to my liking for prone matches. If not for my preference for a magazine fed repeater I would not hesitate to build a Smallbore rifle on the 1761. Other point of consideration, barrel profile options and availability. Although the barrels are easy to swap (much like a CZ 457) several years ago they appeared very hard to find. Maybe a few more years has changed that.
