Multiple front sight inserts ok for lever action silhouette?

Post by Rotnguns »

Hi Everyone,

Just shot my first silhouette match last month and look forward to many more. I have a question about Shavers inserts in a Lyman globe front sight for lever action silhouette. Can I use BOTH an aperture and a bead? Two of the sights stacked together in the Lyman globe? Been searching everywhere for an answer. The NRA rulebook says aperture OR bead or post. But I've seen shooters mention stacking them up.

The actual text from the rule 3.1.3 (a) is "The front sights must be a post or bead or a fixed non magnified round aperture."
Post OR bead OR fixed ----. Ergo, either of those three, singly.

quote: "But I've seen shooters mention stacking them up." end quote.

I believe that two, or even three, round apertures could be stacked so as to create a round aperture which has, in essence, a much thicker annular ring, which is not available as a single item. The nett result is that you still have a "round aperture".

Thanks for your reply. That's how I interpret the rule as well. I'm going to go with a thin bead insert only. Really, the aperture helps the most when I practice in an indoor range with poor lighting.

I am a little bit confused by your question. The rule clearly states that the front sight must be a post or a bead. If the insert is replaceable it can be a post OR a bead so it is not permissible to have an aperture front sight. Maybe I am missing something here?

If you are going to quote rules ;please use the correct rule from the most current rulebook. The 2023 rule is section 3.1.3 article a. The front sight must be a post, bead, or non magnified round aperture.
Please excuse me for being blunt; but the correct information alleviates a lot of confusion.
Also you may not combine a post with an aperture.

...post, or a bead, or a fixed round aperture. I'd like to combine a bead and fixed-round aperture insert. From the informative comments here, looks like that's against the rules, so I'll just use the skinny bead that Shavers makes.

Al,
I assume that you do have the latest rules and stand corrected.

Unfortunately, the "current" rule-book is dated January 2023, although it has been suggested that an updated version is imminent.
The most recent of any NRA rule-books are available here :- https://competitions.nra.org/competitio ... ule-books/

I'm curious as to what BugFather has to say, I saw his post in the classifieds and thought well that might be useful...

That does not comply with rule 3.1.3 (a).

Got it and understand that from the previous posts too...this might not even be a silhouette rifle, but I did enjoy dry firing with a sight setup like this.

This is exactly the setup I have, except with the skinnier bead from Shaver's. The aperture around the bead really helps me find the target when practicing indoors at over 30 yards.

Remember fellas, even when you are only practicing (I'm presuming for silhouette - presumption can be a dangerous thing) your equipment should be the same as if it were for a match.
Why practice with something that might not be compliant (3.1.3 (a)) for our game?

When I go in to sight in my lever rifle at the indoor range I can't see the target what so ever I'm always second guessing where the center is, when I shoot silhouette the animal is very clear to me. I'm going to assume rotnguns has a similar issue and this helps battle that.
