17a Inserts
Is anyone familiar with the Ron Snover 17A insert card with the variety of aperture peep holes. What sizes are the various inside hole diameters offered on the card ?

I've not had any luck finding Ron Snover 17A sight inserts (but I'm not a BPCR shooter yet, which is where I see his name associated with front/rear sights).ppkny wrote:Is anyone familiar with the Ron Snover 17A insert card with the variety of aperture peep holes. Have you checked into the Lee Shaver inserts? I use his inserts for a long range target match and group testing on paper and am happy with them. Here's a link to his website, and his number is on most of the pages.... you can call and speak directly with him:

Re: 17a Inserts
Tlee, thanks but I'm looking for inside diameter of at least .175 for the hole.

Jim Kluskens at Distant thunder will build you custom inserts, they aren't cheap but they are very high quality.
You can also get a set of inserts from Buffalo Arms made by Lee Shaver.

I thought the rules said post or bead only? The aperture sights aren't allowed.
I buy all my guns from t-rex. He's a small arms dealer.

Apparently, they changed the rules for 2017. That's a welcome change for my far-sighted eyes.OldRanger wrote:I thought the rules said post or bead only? The aperture sights aren't allowed.

Is there a link to that rule change anywhere or a way to verify that it's a final decision? That will be a pretty big change for the cowboy rifle silhouette game.

Who says anything about a rule change forthcoming. Can't a guy just speculate and be ahead of the curve. LOL

Re: 17a Inserts
Dan Zimmerman of DZ Arms is going to make Plexi glass inserts for the Lyman 17a front sights...IF the rules get changed. The few sets that he has made are TOP quality...as is everything they make at DZ arms. I tried one this weekend and loved it. It's just the ticket for old, far sighted guys like me. The target was VERY sharp at 100 meters. I have no idea the diameter...but he has made sets with different size holes.

Re: 17a Inserts
A few folks shoot things other than, or in addition to, NRA silhouette... That's where I use them.OldRanger wrote:I thought the rules said post or bead only? The aperture sights aren't allowed.
I've tried a aperture front sight in practice on silhouette targets, didn't hit anymore with it than I did with a post or bead... But I certainly am able to hold a much better group on a round bullseye or plate using a front aperture. Your's, or other's, mileage may vary.

Re: 17a Inserts
I've did some experimenting and if you get the diameter the right size the animal fills the opening....pull trigger.
