Hiwall for hi power silhouette

Post by krgriggs »

I have not shot this game before, but have shot other silhouette games. I would like to build a 7mm-08 on a high wall winchester 1885. Providing it makes weight would it be legal for hi power silhouette ?

Yep, perfectly legal as long as it makes weight and trigger weight if used in hunter rifle.

If the rules weren't ridiculous the 1885 high wall would be legal in CLA too.

Now I just got to get it to make weight, which might be tough. I weighed a similar rifle a .22 and it came in at 9 lbs 14 oz without sights. It had a 28" # 3 round barrel on it.

If you intend on shooting hunter rifle the barrel can only be 26 in. Lopping some off might help with your weight issue.

If CLA rule allowed HiWalls everybody would have one nobody would shoot a Lever gun,

I looked hard at Single shot actions for HP Silhouette some time ago. Few hang ups weight mostly, never found a real advantage compared to a 700. This spring may shoot my CPA .25 Krag with its Unertl 10 X Varmint just for grins. Doubt if it will take down rams. Weight won't make it either.

FYI--Mike Patterson...a former BPCR silhouette national champ....shoots the High Power game with his high wall in 40/65 and with the aperture sights and does quite well

Exactly why they should be legal.

I had an affinity for single shots in my younger days, the extractors on the Browning 78 and Ruger #1's work well with rimmed cartridges, not so much with rimless rounds like 7-08. I think the euro's make a rimmed version of the 7x57, might be a good option.

I shot my 40/65 highwall last week at our ACT state titles, had a ball and of course I had to shoot it with black powder. Just nothing like hitting a turkey in the head with a 420g bullet :)
