Service Rifle anyone?

More expensive to feed, but worth it.

Service Rifle anyone?

Post by Rick Mitchell »

I am a glutton for punishment I suppose. I do most of my competition with various service rifles and iron sights. I started out with an M1 Garand which I used for several years, moved on to an M48 Yugo (k98k variant) Mauser in 8x57 and then picked up a M1917 (love the sights on this one!). My latest candidate for competition (last one for the season coming up this Saturday for our range) is a Swedish Mauser M41B (sans scope of course).

I am so known for using military iron sights at our range that two of the other frequent competitors have setup silhouette guns with some more sophisticated iron target sights (possibly to see if they can get in on the fun?).

Anyone else out there who likes the challenge of shooting service rifle, or failing that iron sights?

Rick you're speaking my language. I would love to shoot my 03 springfield in competition. I don't own a garrand as of this moment but boy that would be a hoot to shoot at metal as well!!!

Have shot it several times with my M1, rough on tired eyes seeing the turkeys. ;)

Rick,
You don't say where you are from. The Ridgway Rifle Club in central PA was 3 silhouette matches a year on there HP range for military rifles.

We shoot Service Rifles at our Club too. 300 yard offhand on Silhouette steel swingers, pattern is taken off IDPA cardboard targets. Swingers well painted you can easily spot strikes from the firing line.

Regulation HP targets CPTR, very difficult with a service rifle. Have seen a number try at out club, never had anyone come back 2nd time. Keep the old War Horses shooting, but give them a target they can hit.

Note when I say Service rifle No AR's. They eat the steel up too bad.

To respond back to ppkny I'm from northern NJ and normally I shoot the matches at Central Jersey Rifle and Pistol Club. They're located in Jackson NJ which is about the center of the state and about 25 or so miles east from PA. I'll have to look up Ridgeway.

Ridgeway is well worth the trip. It's the East Coast Silhouette Mecca
