Another toy in the box.

Post by Bob Mc Alice »

I made a good private local deal on a 700 BDL a couple of weeks back. It was a minty 1982 mfg. .22-250 with iron sights fired only 100 rds. or so. It came with a mid 60's equally nice Redfield 6x scope with a TRI PLEX reticle in Redfield steel rings and base. It even came with a Bianchi Cobra leather sling and QD swivels. The rifle had never been taken apart or messed with in any way. All screws were still in virgin condition as it left the Ilion, NY plant in 82. Well, I took it completely apart and de greased all the parts and pieces. After a thorough cleaning back together it went.....minus the shiny blue .22 barrel. I installed a new stainless factory takeoff in my all time favorite chamber, the SEVEN OH EIGHT Remington. Would you have expected anything less from me? 8) It screwed right on with a perfect .003 over go gage fit. (1.633). The barrel marking ended up right at the bottom of the stocks barrel channel. I opened up the channel just enough for a complete free float condition. I did a nice trigger job on it and set it to a 2.2lb pull.

I took the Leupold 12x off the Remchester and put the Redfield on it. The Leupold 12x is now on the new 700.

I went to CRC on Friday to test out several loads in the 700. Absolutely warm perfect calm conditions all day. First was to zero the Remchester at 300 meters again. The Redfields adjustments were crisp and I got it printing little groups at 300 no problem. Even being only a 6x the fine center cross hair made grouping easy at 300. The 700 shot 130 and 150 MK's really well with Varget. I put 100 rounds total through it with several in between cleanings. I did a final 300 meter zero with Hornady 162 SST's and 38.0 grs. Varget. It prints about 2 inches with that load at 300. I set up a full bank of chickens and pigs to shoot at with some other guns I had with me. I knocked over a bunch of pigs with the 162's out of the new rifle. This will be a great practice, plinker, hunting, and loaner rifle, like all the rest of 'em. :D

Bob, nice work on your new toy! The stainless barrel looks good with the blued action and bolt.

Bob and Mary, I think if we could just get our hands on enough explosives, we can blast his rear into the present! What do you think that we could find some jihadist raghead and tell him that it would please allah to blow McAlice out of the past or what?

They would need a lot of explosives for that ;) While we're at it, we should tell them they get all of his 30 cal stuff in exchange for the good 6.5 pieces to really get him into the present :D

Well JB and 259...what can I say, I have one that is even further into the past, but at least he shoots more than one caliber.

Jerry, you posted in the wrong subject. :? :)

Dearest Mary,

Last I knew this was a website dedicated to metallic silhouette shooting, not varmint shooting. .22-250's are nice, I had four of them in the past. They burn out fast, though. A dump truck full of varmint type critters can attest to the effectiveness of that round in my hands. 8-x That rifle was un used for the last 30 years. Now it will be used a lot for blasting steel critters. And NO FINER round chosen for the purpose!!! 8)

Looks good Mc-A! I'm with you and 7-08...especially after reading some postings wherein the 6.5 folks were discussing losing pigs with some of their loads!!!

So.. how many 7-08s do you have now? I'm starting to think that you should probably add several folks to you will just to have enough people to inherit all of them when you have a heart attack trying to drag them all to the range. I bet you could even trade a couple of them for a scope better than that 12X scope. :)

Oh Great Guru...the triple duces are nice too. As for a 7-08, well at least it'll probably knock down the chickens.

Jason, while the actual number of 7-08 rifles in my safe will remain classified, suffice it to say in the teens. While our shooter numbers are in decline, some day I will be able to pull up to the Denver Rescue Mission with a 15 passenger E-350 Ford van, a vat of hot coffee and breakfast burritos and get all the shooters there I need. I got loaner guns for all of them. :) I might even win the match. :D We will shoot HP at CRC "till the day I die!!

Oh yeah...some of us remember when the 8-10-12 and 16x's with knobs were the cats ass......er..meow. 8) A good shooter don't need lots of magnification to hit the targets. I mowed down a mess of pigs and chickens holding at the foot pad with the Remchester and 6x Redfield.
