Scope in $150-250 range

Post by fisherking73 »

So not wanting to drop a large chunk of change on a scope to just try steelshooting. What is a decent entry level sight in above price range? And is it even worth it? Just going to mount it on Marlin 60 to start, would hate to drop $500 on a scope and then find out steelshooting is not for me.

"Is it worth it" is entirely up to you. Only you can decide what you can afford.

At that price point I would be looking at trying real hard to score a deal on a used fixed power 12X Leupold. You should be able to find one at the upper end of your price range. I like buying used scopes for the same reason I like buying used cars... discounts. Like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/LEUPOLD-STRAIGH ... 45fe74c339.

Then send it to Leupold and have a target knob installed on the elevation turret. If you can afford to have both of them swapped then go for it, but technically you really only NEED a target turret on the elevation and not on the windage knob. I think Bob McAlice has a couple set up like that and they work great.

Maybe you can find a used Sightron or a Bushnell in that price range ($250).

Personally I will say this... avoid 1/8 MOA click scopes. They are such a pain in the butt!

fisherking, the thing about dropping the money into a good scope (Leupold or Weaver) is that they do not loose there value if you do not want to shoot silhouette. I have mentioned Eagle Eye optics in another post, made in Czech, but so far mine seems to be holding up. Granted I have only shot it in three matches so far. A bit on the heavy side for weight and limited reticle choice, but great glass and it appears to be tracking ok.

This is the scope I used my first year on a Ruger 10/22.

Hmmmmm, I need another expensive hobby like another hole in the head lol. Guess I might try and shift around some stock in the safe and consider maybe bumping up to $300-400 range it seems to be a sweet spot of posibilities. I will still use the marlin for now, my other worry is if I like it, well then I am just the type a guy that goes nuts when I focus on something LOL. Guess maybe I will attend a match first and see how it goes iron sights and how others are shooting etc....maybe that will clear my head as to which direction I want to go with this.

fisherking, attend a match and you will be addicted. Yes, it is a fun addiction though! I shot for the first 20+ years iron sights, made it to AA class, and now I have a collection that I take along to matches to loan to newbies...for, well we wont go there but there are a few shooters out there that have become addicted.

I say shoot what you have, attend some matches, try others, (silhouette shooters are always bragging and showing off their stuff), see what works best for you, then decide what you want.

Much good advice for you.
My first experience was using a BSA 6-24X. Not highly recommended but for the first 10 or so matches I participated in it was as useful and repeatable as I was. I didn't harbor any illusions about getting years of turret cranking which have changed with most of my use being EFR Leupold scopes now. Another inexpensive choice I've used is the KT-15 Weaver. Usually less than $200 used.

fisherking73, check the MARKETPLACE
I just put one Tasco World Class P.L.U.S 10X-40X50MM with Dot for sale there for $225 delivered. They are heavy so I never used them in competition only in varmint rifles and never had any issues with the one I'm using. Any how just wanted to give you a heads up in case you are interested.

I'm in very much the same boat as you, fisher king. I found a new, old stock Bushnell Scopechief 6.5-20 x40 on eBay for $170. I am going to give it a try, and if it works well, may send it to TK Lee to have crosshairs and a dot installed ($85). There are plenty of scopes out there that will work without going overboard financially. If I find that I'm really hooked on silhouette, I'll probably go with a Sightron or the Leupold EFR.
