Re: Need some opinions...
I've not gotten out of order with 24x, but I also verify where I am at before settling on the animal I am shooting at. I've also found that I have no problems spotting my hits with 24x. Now 30x... I'm not sure.
Steve Hawks gave me a valuable piece of information this past Sunday. He said, if you hit every animal then you don't have to worry about losing count.

True. That fact works better for some than it does for others, though...Trent wrote:Steve Hawks gave me a valuable piece of information this past Sunday. He said, if you hit every animal then you don't have to worry about losing count.

Re: Need some opinions...
I use variable Bushnell 4200s in 8-32x and also use a booster lens that takes it up to around 40x. I use to have 6-24x 4200s with the booster to around 30x but wanted a bit more magnification. Up till that time with the 24x I never crossfired. The very first match shot I took after mounting the 32x was a crossfire and I have done it several more times in matches since and of course they were all hits mind you!
Once you go over 25x I think you have to pay much closer attention to sweep the rail if you missed any to make sure you are on the right animal. I need to start doing a better job of that. Of course I blame the spotter for calling the right spot on the wrong animal
For the variable versus fixed the fixed is ust that fixed so whatever conditions are you better be ready for them. When it is especially windy and the rifle and shooter are being blown around it is nice to be able to back off a bit if you want. I always leave it at max power but occasionally shoot my 10m inside at say 10x and it is amazing how dead steady that dot looks after using 40x. The thing is I find my reaction time slows compared to being at max mag. As my hold has improved I find myself trying to break shots of smaller and smaller spots on the animal and I just can't see that well at 24x. With around 40x I see a lot more animal fill the scope and my hold is slowly getting better with the higher magnification. Better/steadier hold combined with a bigger target picture to hold within and the ability to pick spots better within the target allows me to have more shot selection.
I handed a friend my rifle here at the house one day to shoot with it set at 40x and he couldn't even hardly align his head to see through the scope the exit pupil is so small your head placement has to be exact. Then after showing him that he couldn't find the swingers to shoot at as he looked all over it was too funny. So then I dialed it back to around 10x and he was finally able to locate the targets. He shot a few and tried it back at 40x and then said no way back to 10x.
