Savage 99 .250-3000

More expensive to feed, but worth it.

Savage 99 .250-3000

Post by mordecai »

I'm a little behind in catching up on some posts as I'm only home for a few days but I found a few minutes to slip out to the gun show this weekend...

I finally found a rifle I have been keeping an eye out for a very long time. My great-grandmother had a Savage 99 .250-3000 that was taken before I was born, but ultimately replaced with a .308 which I was entrusted with when I turned 20. It started my Savage 99 bug... I'm always looking for an older-style good-shooter whose price isn't in the stratosphere... That finally came true this weekend and in the .250-3000 I've been holding out for. It's a wonderful 1946 vintage and I am genuinely looking forward to spending my twilight years (decades from now I hope) working up loads in this flat-shooter... It's too light to use on Silo-HP but that probably won't stop me from trying it once just to see what she can do.

Stock photo from the internet until I can take my own pic, but looks very similar.

Wow one from yester year... our family friend had a 250-3000 that was his Dads and handed down in thier family. It was a great shooter and I loved it for deer hunting. Not sure what ever happened to it after he passed. I'm sure you'll be in love with it as they are great flat shooting rifles.
Thanks for sharing :-bd

nice rifle Mike. did you know that Lorren, Laura's dad shoots a savage 250 case with a 6.5mm pill in it for highpower. takes the rams down all day long. I might have him build one for Cheryl.

You'll have to get in line my good friend :D Your right it does sound interesting. Im going to do some research on brass, dies, etc to see if its something worth doing or just build Cheryl a .260 and be done with it, I've got a chitload of brass for .260

I expect the .260 brass is the way to go - far more common (.308 or .243 brass)...
Actually, I believe the .250 and .300 Savage case heads are the same and served as the basis for the .308 Win...
Bolt heads and actions should all be pretty similar...

I think your right. same bolt face, could use a remington short action and have the barrel reamed for the 250. Powder valley has winchester 250 brass up the ying/yang. Looks like all you have to do is buy an expander plug from redding or whoever in 6.5mm and full length size them and whola you've got a 6.5-250 savage. A bag of 250 rounds is only a 112 something, thats way more than enough. Paul seemed quite interested in it as well. Oopps better keep our mouths shut :-$ about this or everyone's gonna want one and all the brass will be gone. ^#(^

Nothing new under the sun. It's the old 6.5mm IHMSA that uses the Savage brass. I have one in 7mm IHMSA. About the same case capacity as the 6.5X47 Lapua but the Lapua uses much better brass which makes it more accurate. Most of the shooters that used the IHMSA used the 300 Savage brass but there is no reason you can't use the 250 Savage brass or even 22-250 brass. 6.5mm IHMSA dies and reamers are available by some makers, no need to send for expensive custom dies.

Or if you want to do it the inexpensive way and just want to reduce case capacity of the 260 Rem have your gunsmith run the 260 Rem reamer short to accept the Savage brass and then remove metal from the bottom of 260 Rem dies to be able to size the brass and seat the bullets. Several gunsmiths I know or knew have done just that very successfully.
