Re: Southern Hospitality? None Found In Pinson Ala.
Since this thread has not died. This is my take as a Match director. When a Match Director allows someone to put up his own paper and take bench zeroes with not much practice time left there is always the chance that the person may be one of those that shoots off the bench for an hour to get a Chicken zero, then an hour a piece for the other three animals. You just never know unless you have been with that person many times at the range on the same firing line. Its awkward to walk over to the bench and tell them they need to stop so the match can commence. They always say I just need a few more minutes.
Do not apply the above statement to the original poster. I am speaking of generic, general match situations I have encountered.
At my last match, I had a lot of e-mails previous to the Match that requested paper zero times. I granted that time and ran very late for the usual start time because those people had work interfere with them getting to the range to get zeroes. I granted that time and made other people upset who could zero on animals in the standing position. Those who could zero standing were old hands and had driven three hours to support my local program. What the old hands may have not known was that the locals needed all those zeroes because there was a lot of rifle and ammo sharing going on and this was their first Match of the season.
From age 9 to around age 16 my son could not shoot off a bench. I mean he could not hit a 8 X 10 sheet of paper at 40 meters but while in standing position he had attempted quite a few long run records on the close animals. In practice he had hit 61 Chickens in a row at age 12. Thankfully that changed and if he senses something is wrong with a rifle or scope he will now bench one in a heartbeat. This is saving me a lot of time now. So, people do change in their bench techniques.

Here is what has always worked for me...published sight in time begins at 9 match begins at 10...need 10 minutes to set up range for match...at 15 till the hour I call "Range will be called cold in 5 minutes...give another warning at 2 minutes or so.....final warning at 1 minute....I then call it cold and cold is cold, no exceptions....granted sometimes that plan doesn't work out when we have a few late arrivals that have to be squadded etc....but when I say it's cold it's cold...people learn to work with it...some are not happy....life is not fair sometimes...we do our best but it's and imperfect world..

Big ol alligator tears almost streamed down my face when I heard this, but a true statement none the less "Fair is a place where a farmer takes his pig to win a blue ribbon"
U.S. Army-Donating blood since 1775.
