Re: GREAT NEWS!
Great to hear that the whole clan will be there. I wish I could figure out how to get any of my family hooked on silhouette. I'm working on getting my 9-year-old daughter into it now. I didn't meet you before but I'm going to be there this year and look forward to meeting you then.

Congratulations on being accepted to UNM!
Too bad our paths won't cross; I graduate this spring from UNM with an engineering degree.
What do you want to major in?

Re: GREAT NEWS!
I don't have the pleasure of knowing you, but that sure sounds like a heck of a good time!! Glad to hear that your uncle returned home safely after two tours.
What will you be studying at UNM?

Re: GREAT NEWS!
I am going to be majoring in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in optics and optical sciences. I hope to get an internship at Sandia Labs or maybe even a job at SOR there sometime during or after college. But i am going straight for a masters. so i'm looking at around 5 years. I have every basic out of the way due to AP classes and dual credit therefore my only basic class i will be taking would be english. so i cut a year of college out thankfully.
Any advice for surviving the engineering program?

Re: GREAT NEWS!
If you can't figure it out, stand on your head and look at it. From the real practical point of view in the working field, don't stay in the ivory tower...get out and talk to the tech's, especially the ones that have survived mutliple changes in management, they are not stupid and have a lot of practical experience. One of the biggest failures I have seen in work force is an engineer that never left his cubical, yet did flood control.....he wouldn't believe what the techs were telling him from the field, until the multimillion dollar lawsuit came in on loss of fruit production, then he came out and looked, we ended up being good friends but it took a serious kick to get him away from the computer models to see the real world.
Sandia is a big facility, and has quite a mixture of people there, work with a lot of them calibration side, and on the photovoltaic research area. Good luck and the optical side is very interesting, one of my buddies that used to shoot pistol silhouette was serious into the optics at FIT, now retired and can't see well enough to shoot much anymore but a hell of a tutor on the math side.

- Rest when you can.
- Get help early and often.
- Join a study group.
- Read the assignments even if you have trouble understanding. Read it anyway. Twice.
- Keep up with the homework.
- Did I mention study?

BC...this boy will survive any program he decides to put himself through. It's wheat he will do with it when he gets out. He may think it will be tough but he has lots of great mentors close by, all he has to do is ask.
Ketchup hang in there and remember like shooting...one class at a time, they will not schedule you for two exams at the same time, and don't forget it is much easier now then trying to go back after 20 plus years.

Re: GREAT NEWS!
That's great to hear Mary! And you are so right about trying to go back after 20 years! Or 30...
I have seen enough engineering students at mid-term to know how hard the survivors have worked, and seen enough dunder headed engineering errors to wonder which classes were supposed to teach them humility and sense...
