embarrased to ask this...eye dominace

Post by timbertoes »

ya, a dumb question..I could find out at the range..:) but that wont happen for a few days at least.

with a strongly dominate left eye, if I shoot my scoped rifle right handed/right eye ( I am also a other eye-closer)

will it actually hit the same place as when I use my left eye/left hand ?

I hate to admit but may I have just spent extra $$, time and hassle trying to get a CZ in left hand for nothing ?

thanks,
bryan

Byran,
A change in cheek weld to the stock will change the shot placement, if all other variables remain the same. So yes shooting right/hand righteye will be different shot placement than left hand left eye. Typically this can be overcome with scope adjustment, but in some cases the dominance is too much to overcome reasonably.

As for getting a left hand CZ you will not be sorry if you are strongly left eye dominant, as the eye fatigue will wear on you when shooting after a while. You may want to try a blinder on the scope also and see if that doesn't help relax the strain on the eye.

Good shooting and don't be embarassed to ask questions, this group will be more than happy to give you their opinions!!

thanks for the advice :)

Lately, I have had so much trouble and hassle, getting a good .22

My recently purchased Savage MKII GL wont hold a group. significant flyers at random. Using 5 types of popular target ammo, Wolf two kinds, Federal, CCI, Lapua.

Just changed out the scope on it. Scope was a Tasco 10-40x50, not really a smart purchase anyway... got the OK to return it for store credit towards a real scope. funny though, I just put a older Japan Tasco 16x fixed power target turret scope on the Savage. But since it worked well on a .222, I know its good. Actually a noce scope to look at, and through :)

Prior to the Savage, and bought for hunting fun, a Winchester Wildcat sporter.
Which had a Barrel that pointed low and right. It is in for repair...again..as I had to refuse the returned "fix", since a phone call determined they made a "fix' that had nothing to do with the POI problem.
whcih of course took several phone calls...since they must have just thrown away the problem description letter included..

And now... well I bought a Left CZ 452 American on Gun Broker. Tuesday the 9th. 2 Phone calls, to promises to ship, and nothing. CC not charged.
now likely too late to make it for Saturdays fun match. I am calling again tommorow, and if I dont get the answer I want, I am telling them to keep it.
that is if they actually even have it.. makes me wonder. Because, now..as of today... would'nt you know it, but my local guy can finally get one.

has been very frustrating buying a good .22

Which if shooting right handed would work out just as fine...would have not been a problem. Even opens up the world of older Remmy match guns, etc.
I dint know if my left eye dominance is any stonger or the same as others, but at 100 yards, no scope could make up for that amount of "windage" :)
But I was not sure if a scope would even have to make up for eye dominance.

Are you right or left handed?

My right eye is very dominant, but I'm very left handed in everything else. Bought a cheap ambi air rifle, shot left handed for a while on a peep sight, had to close the right eye. Started reading about eye dominance, and switched to right handed for rifle and shotgun. It has not been a problem. Better to shoot the way your eye tells you.

So it sounds like you are not cross-dominant. That is, you use a right handed gun because they are more readily available than left handed guns (seems especially true for .22s)? It also sound like you are not completely ambidextrous? Do you shoot the same scores whether you are shooting left or right handed? Finally, can you shoot a pistol (or rifle) with iron sight with both eyes open without seeing double?

If you have sighted in your rifle the correct way, your point of impact should not change. What you see through the scope should not change even if you use your middle eye. What does change is how and where you hold your rifle.

No scores... :) this weekend will (would) be the first time, to a fun match.
unfortunatly, my only .22 at this time, the Savage MKII GL, shoots really, really bad and will have to be sent back for evaluation.
I'm talking about 3 to 4" in any direction kind of shots, off bags, with a known good scope. just verified again today.

Yikes! That's not just bad, that's - really, really bad? I'd clean it, do a quick tightness check on bolts and set action bolt torque to 42 inch/pounds and see what happened, and then let Savage worry about it. Heck, I've seen Remington 504's that could beat that!

I cant see anything wrong with the crown, but cant say I know everything to look for :)
I did check for shaving lead when loading, that was ok.

Good news though, my CZ425 american arrived today..not from GB though..I realized that wasnt going to happen, getting a run-around, found a nib lefty on davidsons. seems like they just got them in.

looks like I can now make the Haltom City, Tx. fun match !
let the good times roll. :ymparty:

am meeting another shooter in my town, about my age(im 52) who likes rimfires, so we will make a day of it.

and some other good news..well, next best possible news.. win/browning service says my Win Wildcat cant be fixed, so fax in the receipt, and I will get a refund. So, while I wont have a cool looking wildcat, at least my loss is minimized, and will have some $$ towards ammo and range time...not to mention that....
Today I saw a Sako M78 being taken in on a trade.... put my name on it for first dibs when they get it checked out and ready. Going to learn to shoot ambidextrous - if they give me a fair price.
